| This is a boxwood and ivory tabaco-ire with bats expertly carved in great detail in high relief. On one side, its panel is filled with a mass of flying bats. On the other, framed by auspicious clouds in high relief, three bats clasp a plaque with gold-lacquered characters. A carved nut ojime holds the cord in place. (Bats in East Asian art are associated with good fortune and happiness.) This tabaco-ire is in excellent condition with no cracks or restoration. 19th Century, Japan | |||||||||
