| This is a whimsical Hirado porcelain candlestick holder formed as a karako (Chinese boy) with bisque eyes, supporting a tall column with one hand. A three-toed dragon in high relief coils along the top of the column, raising its sharp claws high. This Hirado piece is finely executed in white and pale brown enamels. Finely- modeled detailing with meticulous attention to the folds of the garment and the scales on the dragon exhibit clearly the wonderful malleability of the specific clay found at the Hirado kiln. The candlestick holder is in very good condition for its age, with no chips or cracks. Height: 14" 19th Century, Japan | ||||||||
