| An extremely beautiful Hirado porcelain vase of elegant double -gourd shape with small demon-head handles on each side. On its body, executed in underglaze blue on a white ground, a branch with large leaves and tendrils gives way to a gourd from which various horses are released in full gallop. This mythological motif of the horse escaping from a gourd refers to the attribute of the Sennin Chokwaro, whose graceful horse generously provides means of transportation to the Sennin, fatigued from his long travels. This vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Height: 9 ¾", 19th Century, Japan | |||||||||
