| This is a rare ivory tanto formed as a vajra, its hilt pierced and carved as a sphere from which lotus flowers emerge. On one portion of the ivory saya, a continuous landscape with pine, birds-in-flight and a boatman, is meticulously carved in high and low relief. On the reverse, the legendary monk Daruma stands wrapped in a multi-fold cloak, portrayed crossing the Yangzi River on a rush leaf. (Daruma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, is a beloved figure in Japanese culture and art and his visage can be found in all manner of artforms.) The blade is Ken-style (straight, double-edged), with gilt habaki and dates from 19th Century, Japan. Both blade and koshirae are in very good condition with no damage or restoration. | ||||||||
