| This is a beautifully formed, four-lobed Satsuma koro with a silver and sentoku lid carved overall with kiku in relief on a textured ground. The earthenware body is composed of four pronounced lobes gently tapering to form its four elegant legs. On each lobe, cartouches depict fanciful arrangements of kiku and pawlonia, an elaborate gosu blue ground with gilt scrollwork enhancing the luxurious quality of the piece. "Geppo" gilt signature and Shimazu mon can be found on the base. This koro is in very good condition with a minor kiln mark on the interior, altogether a superior example of this desirable gosu- blue Satsuma ware. Height: 4.5", diameter: 5" 19th century, Japan | |||||||||
