| A studio pottery okimono modeled as a recumbent pheasant in the manner of the noted Kyoto-based artist, Nonomura Ninsei. Employing a technique here similar to one used by Korean potters, a milky-white slip was applied to its stoneware body, producing the crackled finish visible along the tail's underside. Like Ninsei's work, this okimono is modelled naturalistically, the multi-colored plumage and beautifully-structured visage worked in high relief. The sculpture's iron-rich tenmoko glaze covers the front of the pheasant, while variations of green, gold and red enamels cover the sculpted wings and tail. This lovely okimono is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Kogetsu signature cartouche on the base. Height: 6", length: 7.5" 19th Century, Japan | |||||||||
