| This is a superb oval sentoku tsuba worked in an elaborate sukashi design. On its front surface, sennin Chokwaro leisurely sits beside his horse after summoning the creature from his double gourd, a powerful, gnarled pine tree providing shelter after his tiring journey. The scene is brilliantly designed in gilt and takazogan with the pierced work carved magnificently. On the reverse, a stylized stream flows downward, showing Chokwaro's back executed with rich gilt enhanced against the powerful pine. This tsuba is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. 19th Century, Japan | |||||||
