Tobacco Pouch
This is a small tobacco pouch of rectangular form with ivory ojime formed as a tortoise shell, the attached ivory netsuke carved as a clam shell. On its flap, a shakudo and gold-inlaid clasp is modeled as two superimposed fish , their bodies intricately detailed. The tobacco pouch itself is designed with a quiet tortoise- shell pattern woven with gold threads and colored silks.(This tortoise/ nautical theme refers to the legend of Urashima Taro, a fisherman who traveled across the seas on the back of a tortoise. Arriving at the sea kingdom of Ryujin he discovers that his tortoise-transport was indeed the king's daughter, whom he later married...) This tobacco pouch is in very good condition with only minor wear, consistent with age. Length: (pouch) 4", (including netsuke) 8" Meiji Period, Japan
