| This is a striking bronze vase of flattened form and flared neck on self stand. Its two panels illustrate scenes-from-nature in high relief showing the superb chiseling and use of metals that define the best of Meiji metalwork. On one, a long-tailed bird perches upon a flowering spray of leaves and buds; on the other, a kingfisher eyes a small frog from his perch on a lotus leaf. The artist creates magnificent sprays of leaves, flowers and berries at the neck, front and back. The meticulous use of gold, bronze and silver in high relief magnifies the natural aspects of the imagery. SUSA signature and kao on main panel. No dents, scratches or restoration. Height: 11" Meiji Period, Japan | |||||||||||
