| This is a foliated silver and multi-metal covered box with polished silver interiors. On its lid, a scene from the fairy tale "Saru Kani Kassen" ("The Feud between the Monkey and the Crab") is portrayed in takazogan (high relief) with silver, shakudo, gold and copper inlays. The fairy tale tells of a monkey who deceives a crab, slightly injuring it. But the crab decides upon revenge seeking the aid of an army of crabs and the help of a few friends. (The monkey is a beloved creature in Japanese lore, depicted often in various media.) This lovely silver and multi-metal box is in excellent condition, the gold kakihan signature cartouche, Eiraku sai, on the base. Length: 3.25", width: 3.25" Meiji Period, Japan | ||||||
