| Here is an extraordinary sentoku tsuba of large circular form, its ground carved and textured. Celebrating the revered position of the fish in Japan's culture, a marvelous copper and shakudo sea bream (tai) is segmented and carved meticulously in high relief on its front surface. Fragments of fruit and bones are all heavily applied in high relief with copper, shakudo, and gold. The metallurgist depicts in great detail the scales, teeth and flesh of the bream and on the reverse, bones and fruit are rendered with remarkable attention to nuances of production - carefully portraying the texture and form of each. This tsuba is in very good condition, with an incised signature of the maker, Yasuchika. 20th century, Japan | ||||||
