| This is an important gold-lacquered kogo of square form. On its cover, a circular inset of peony executed in gold, silver and red hiramaki-e on a kinji ground is set on a gold lacquered ground with mat-weave design. Stylized waves frame the surface of the lid and cartouches of sakura in gold and silver further decorate the cover. On the sides, shakudo and gilt fittings modeled as kiku on leafy branches are beautifully set under deco-inspired gold-lacquer openings. Interiors are designed in dense maki-e on a roiro ground. This charming gold lacquered kogo was formerly part of the noted collection of Charles A. Greenfield, his sticker still on the base. This fine box is in excellent condition. Height: 2.5", width: 2.25" 19th Century, Japan | |||||||||
