| A fine and rare specimen of late 15th to early 16th century Ming Cizhou type Meiping, slight thickly potted, decorated with reversed a white on iron-brown to aside of peony blossom and white on black to the other side. Condition is perfect. High: 23cm. Note: The Japanese scholar Gakuji Hesebe says in his work Cizhou kiln that 'the second half of the history of the Cizhou kilns is still in darkness', but in the 1990's, Prof Bi Keguan discovered in association with Ming blue & white ware a great number of white with black decoration ceramics belonging to Cizhou type wares on a capital construction site in Beijing, which provided new important material for studying Cizhou type wares and of course giving me as well a few progress which to researches on Cizhou ware have long been limited in the Song and Yuan period only, while the later products, especially those Ming period ware, have given no deserved attention. The recently published 'Ming Ceramics in the British Museum' and Hare's Fur, Tortoiseshell and Partridge Feathers, Chinese Brown & Black glaze 400-1400 discerned from the handed down and unearthed objects a number of Ming Cizhou type ceramics, thus the study of this subject has made new advances again. | |||||||||||||
