| A crested cup and saucer - each with the Coat of Arms of (Martyr) SAINT THOMAS A'BECKET. There is a very EARLY impressed mark for AYNSLEY china on the base of the saucer (see enlargement 5). The cup has a stamp for retailer J. Abrahams', Canterbury (see enlargement 4). Circa 1880. The Coat of Arms features a shield in turquoise, yellow, and black surmounting a banner which is captioned: ARMS OF St THOMAS A'BECKET. The date DEC 29 1170 is just below the banner. Saint Thomas A'Becket (1118(?)-1170 was the Archbishop of Canterbury under King Henry II's rule and was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral on Dec. 29, 1170. Gilt trim. The cup has some areas of VERY light crazing otherwise the two pieces are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines. The cup measures 2 3/4 inches in height. The saucer measures 5 1/4 inches in diameter. | ||||||||
