| An extremely fine VICTORIAN PERIOD STERLING SILVER and ENAMEL LOCKET with 14K GOLD HINGE. Not marked but tests sterling silver and 14K gold. Circa 1870. The oval locket is very large - measuring approximately 1 5/8 inches (not counting the bail) by 1 3/8 inches with a depth of 10.70mm. It has a large (1/2 inch) V bail enameled on one side with a black and white enameled design. Both sides of the locket have enameled designs so the wearer can choose either side for display. On side 1). - the design is centered with a small white enamel Maltese Cross set within a larger black enamel-bordered Byzantine Cross which, in turn, is within a lozenge shape surrounded by elaborate white and black enamel scroll designs. Side 2). - repeats the lozenge and black and white enameled scroll designs but is centered with a stylized monogram. The locket has a 14K yellow gold hinge (tested) which opens to reveal two glass framed compartments for photos. The locket and bail attaches to a large spring ring on the end of a 17 1/2 inch chain. The chain is composed of fluted 5.50mm wide rolo links and is original to the piece. Gross weight 35.30 grams. In remarkably excellent condition. A fantastic and rare locket. | |||||||||||
