BABY'S CORAL & SILVER BELLS RATTLE. GEORGE UNITE. 1868.
A fine STERLING SILVER "CORAL & BELLS" RATTLE by GEORGE UNITE. Birmingham, England, 1868. Stamped with the maker's mark at the top and fully hallmarked at the base with: Lion passant; anchor (for Birmingham); duty mark (Victoria); and date letter T. The rattle is also engraved at the top with the baby's initials: J.T.P.Jr. The sterling silver piece is a rattle, whistle, and teether - all in one. The curved coral teether is set in a finely decorated silver piece from which is suspended three bells. A ring pendant is at the top for attaching a ribbon or chain so it may be worn around the neck. The rattle measures 3 3/4 inches in length. One of the three bells is of a different design from the other two so may, or may not, possibly be a replacement. However, the whole effect is one of harmonious design and fine workmanship. In excellent condition.
