| LIFE SAVERS BOOK-O-STARS. THE KINGS OF ENTERTAINMINT (sic). Life Savers, Inc.: Port Chester N.Y., 1931. Rare booklet measuring 6 1/4 inches by 5 inches. Full color wrappers featuring a color picture of Ken Maynard on the cover and an advertisement for Life Savers Pep-O-Mint on the back cover. For this Life Saver promotional booklet 3000 boys were surveyed to determine their favorite movie stars. Sixteen of the boys' top favorites are included, each with photographs, their movie studio affiliation, and each with a short biography. Western cowboy stars seem to predominate and include TOM MIX, BUCK JONES, and KEN MAYNARD. JOE E. BROWN, JACKIE COOPER, LEW AYRES, and RICHARD DIX are among the actors listed with only one female star, JANET GAYNOR, being represented. Last, but definitely NOT LEAST - is, MICKEY MOUSE who is listed as a COLUMBIA STAR and is given his own full page portrait and a special biography written by Harry Hammond Beale. Beale claims that a tiny dwarf stork brought Michael (later Mickey) Mouse to the Rev. and Mrs. Field Mouse on September 29th, 1928 (Michaelmas Day - hence the name Michael). According to Beale, Mickey moved to Hollywood where he met WALT DISNEY who signed him to a starring contract. Mickey won International fame after making his screen debut at the Colony Theatre in New York. A note: sadly all the other stars listed in the booklet are no longer with us but the good news is MICKEY MOUSE is still going strong! The covers are nearly detached but overall the booklet is in very good, but used, condition. | |||||||||||||||
