"CRANFORD" By MRS. GASKELL. WITH A PREFACE BY ANNE THACKERAY RITCHIE. AND ILLUSTRATIONS BY HUGH THOMSON. London: Macmillan, 1891. 8vo. Pictorial gilt stamped green cloth cover designed by Thomson and SIGNED with his initials. The cover features, in gilt, a large pot of flowers with playing cards strewn around it and a tray set with tea accessories. Gilt floral design on the spine. All edges gilt. Green coated endpapers. Black and white frontispiece with tissue guard and 110 black and white illustrations by Hugh Thomson. Cover corners rubbed and ink name verso front flyleaf otherwise a very good copy. FIRST EDITION WITH THOMSON'S ILLUSTRATIONS. Spielmann & Jerrold 6. This edition of "CRANFORD" by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, nee Stevenson, (1810-1865) was an enormous success and received praise from many quarters. The beautiful decorative binding style used on this and other Macmillan books came to be known as the "CRANFORD SERIES". "Cranford" was recently adapted for television and shown on PBS as a mini series starring Dame Judi Densch.
