AN EARLY AMERICAN (Pre-1800)EX LIBRIS BOOK LABEL for THOMAS DAWES, Jr. BOSTON. (1757-1825). The label measures 1 1/2" by 3 1/4" and is lettered "THOMAS DAWES, jun.(underlined)/BOSTON." - all within a typographical border. An important early book label for Thomas Dawes, Junior. Dawes graduated from Harvard in 1777. He was a Member of the State Constitution Conventions of 1780 and 1782 and one of the writers featured in the DEBATE ON THE CONSTITUTION, PART ONE Sept. 1789-February 1788. His fellow writers in the debate included JOHN HANCOCK, JOHN ADAMS, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, ALEXANDER HAMILTON, PATRICK HENRY, and no less than GEORGE WASHINGTON among others. His contribution "To Promote Trade, Industry, and Morality" was offered at the Resolution of the Tradesmen of the town of Boston, January 8, 1788. Dawes' father Thomas Dawes (1731-1809), friend and political crony of JOHN HANCOCK, was the designer and builder of the new Brattle Square Church, where Dawes laid the cornerstone in 1772. Thomas Dawes, Junior was also a Judge of the SUPREME COURT OF MASSACHUSETTS - 1792-1803. The book label is printed on fine laid paper and is in excellent condition.
