14K GOLD ONYX PEARL & ENAMEL MOURNING BROOCH 1877
A VICTORIAN 14K GOLD (not marked but tested), ONYX, PEARL & ENAMEL MOURNING BROOCH. 1877. Engraved in script on the reverse: Mary Cockayne Died Septr.11th 1877. The back is fitted with a glass hair compartment (empty). The circular brooch is centered with an eight point star having a cluster of 9 NATURAL SEED PEARLS mounted on an ONYX BASE which, in turn, rests on a circle of 12 black and gold enamelled heart-shaped designs - all within a rope-twist border and small gold balls. The original pin stem is not gold but metal for strength. Measures 1 1/4 inches in diameter with a depth of approximately 1/2 inch. Four of the twelve heart-shaped pieces show minor loss to the black enamel without affecting the gilt design. Overall condition is excellent.
