Original Teruhide Kato (1936 - ) Japanese Woodblock Print Moon and Cherry Blossoms Pencil Signed Kato woodblock print Teruhide Kato (1936 - ) - In the 1960’s and 70’s Kato was a major contemporary kimono designer in Japan. He studied at the Kyoto Art College and began his professional design career as a part of the flourishing post war art scene in Kyoto. He quickly developed a following for his contemporary kimono designs that balanced the tradition of the kimono with a contemporary Japanese design aesthetic. In the mid 1980’s Kato ended his career in the kimono field and turned to his first artistic interest- the traditional arts of painting and woodblock print making. He concentrated on landscape scenery from his beloved home city of Kyoto. Kyoto is rich with architectural and natural beauty and Kato’s scenes capture the magic of this beautiful place. In 1991 Kato made his international debut in New York and the book "Kyoto Romance" was released in conjunction with the New York show. Kato’s artistic style is unique and, like his kimono designs, the woodblock prints interpret traditional Japanese imagery and arts in a contemporary style. Kato’s prints are beautifully printed on high quality paper and pencil signed. The prints often include hand applied details; snow, cherry blossoms, etc. Kato’s prints are a terrific area of collecting in the contemporary print market. They are fantastic pieces that add a contemporary Japanese design element to any room, also a good item to collect and hold. Moon and Cherry Blossoms - The traditional cherry blossom scene with an overtly contemporary feel - exquisite.
