Embroidery on gauze in vivid colored silks and metal threads. Blue silk lining. Condition: Fine, minimal wear, no sun disk. Dimension: 29.2 cm high x 30.6 cm wide.

A front and back Mandarin square dating from the second half of the 19th century. A pair of insignias of a court official's wife, each showing a paradise flycatcher, denoting the ninth civil rank. Made of silk tapestry (kossu, k'o-suu) with metallic thread and painted details. The background was probably covered by peacock feathers, rarely survived to the present days. The shovel with maker's mark "TC" standing for Tuck Chang who was active between the late 19th century and early 20th century in Shanghai and Chinese character marks. Double square seat mat used as a bench cover on which monks were seated in Buddhist monasteries during religious ceremonies. The central disc medallion among peonies and the border with lishui pattern. Knotted soft wool pile, cotton warp and fringes. Condition: clean and full pile, cotton selvage slightly worn.
