A nice large scarab which would have been sewn on the wrapping or threaded on a net of beads, placed on the mummy. Dates to approx the Third Intermediate Period, 1079-800 BC. Has holes for thread, so that it could be sewn onto the bandages of the mummy. Intact as shown and in good condition with some surface ware. Measures 2.5 inches in length. The winged scarab was a common motif on mummy masks and coffins, representing rebirth. It would have been placed on the beaded netting, usually placed over the heart. This scarab would have come from a complete set of 4 Sons of Horus with a winged scarab. Provenance: Gustave Jequier (1868-1946) Authentication: Gayle Gibson, Egyptologist. F.D. Friedman (ed.), Gifts of the Nile: ancient Egy (London, Thames and Hudson, 1998) C.A.R. Andrews, Egyptian mummies (London, The British Museum Press, 1984) |
