Very fine Hyksos steatite scarab, representative of the Canaanite production which dates to approx 1640-1540 BC (2nd Intermediate Period). This example has a very detailed top portion with holes for suspension. The bottom has eight concentric circles with middle column ... "to [the Ancient Egyptians] the suave perfection of the spiral pattern, so small on a scarab, so regular and restrained without any stiffness or harshness, would act as a mental and moral calm; it would call up the sense of the beauty of excellence, of the worth of restraint, of the perfection of regularity" .Petrie, Buttons and Design Scarabs. pg 12. This scarab measures 1/2 inch in length. Provenance: Gustave Jequier (1868-1946) Authentication: Gayle Gibson, Egyptologist.
