Height 3,2 cm. Signature: Tomomasa. Demons from the japanese tradition - Onis - are often represented by netsukeshis more irreverent than threatening and, like the sprites of our forests, we well-like more than fear them. In this scene two Onis, the smaller on the shoulder of the elder, are reading a scroll, probably stolen to his owner, as to make fun of the humans with their interest for culture. It is a confrontation between the instinctive side of us - represented by this demons, always im ...click for details

SOLD, Thank you

Height 5,3 cm. Tekkai Sennin has been reputed to be direct pupil of Lao Tse. The legend is that he was a good looking and brilliant man and that, due to his taoists studies, he reached impressive results. His most important power was the ability to separate his soul from his body; but this ability had been the cause of his ruin. The tale is that he went to paradise to visit his master Lao Tse but stayed away from his body for too long so that one of his pupils, believing he was dead, decided to ...click for details

Height 3,4 cm. Signature: Masakazu. "Fox zen " means "phoney teacher": It became apparent from the beginnings of the Buddhist tradition that there always were people who would try to fake their wisdom, hiding behind unclear teaching, so typical also of the real zen. In China, such fakers were derided as fox Zen ractitioners. This expression ('fox Zen') originated from the famous "Hyakujo's Fox" koan, in which a master had been punished for his bad tea ...click for details

Height 3,8 cm. Signature: Tadachika. Masks are probably the most antique subject matter for netsukes, as they were carved by the same artisans who were producing masks for theatre plays. Producing groups of masks brings to a miniaturization of the models, so that the ability of the netsukeshi consists in carving the exact details of each face and make all of them recognizable. Masks of this netsuke derive from vaious kind of theatre: there are two Onis, Ayakashi (?) and Kitsune on upper side and ...click for details
