Our superb lace collar from the late 19th or very early 20th century is as detailed in back as in front. Each element of the ecru lace - flowers, grapes, leaves and so forth - was stitched by hand onto fine netting that's a beautiful color match. I'm not expert enough about textiles to be sure the lace elements are also hand-crafted, but feel that's likely, given the design quality of the piece and the loving care it's been given. Acquired at a major antiques fair in Newmarket, near Cambridge in England, the collar is more than 17" wide at the bottom of the front. About 23" long from front corner to back corner, it gives you almost a FOOT of gorgeous lace on each side of your shoulders. A fine hook and thread eye remain at the bottom of the back and another thread eye a few inches above indicates one hook is missing, easily replaced. I've found no other flaws.

Ingenious, those Victorians! Here's one for the almost-beyond-belief department: a 19th century English carry-all of black cord and ebonized bentwood that's practically a piece of HAND LUGGAGE - and yet weighs almost nothing and even collapses to a size (about 9" x 8 1/2" x 1" thick) that we can store in almost any modern purse. When open, it's MASSIVE: roughly 13 1/2" long, 14" tall and 5 1/2" thick.
This treasure could be the star of anyone's handbag collection but, if you actually want to use it, you can. Astoundingly, it's in fabulous condition, showing only the slightest signs of wear.
Please e-mail for additional photos and be amazed by this rare and wonderful contraption, which I expect will find a home as a fascinating prop for film or stage productions, unless a passionate collector snatches it up first. Thanks for looking!

Everything about this treasure screams *Edwardian* - the delicate sumptuousness of its frame that opens like a box; the miniscule size of the micro-beads and their romantic pastel colors, as well as the delicate sumptuousness of its frame that opens like a box and has a diagonally-mounted chain pretty enough to be a necklace. The ribboning floral pattern of the beadwork (identical on both sides) has Art Nouveau lines, executed with the uncommon lightness and restraint of the Edwardian era. An added plus is that it's quite large for an evening bag: about 8 inches by 7 inches, with a 20-inch chain.
How I wish this jewel of a bag were in perfect condition! You honestly don't notice the flaws except on close inspection, since there's so much beauty to see, but some fraying exists, mainly near the top, with small areas in which beads have been lost. Even so, it's a treasure with lots of wear left in it - and well worth restoring, if you have the skill or know someone who does. It needs only moderate restoration to be museum-quality and its exquisite antique floral filigree frame of this purse is worth far more than our price for the bag. (I've seen antique purse frames without a scrap fabric and not half so unusual priced elsewhere online at $300-400.)
There's no charge for insured U.S. shipping and gift wrap is always free when desired. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!

Reduced this month from $230 ...
More than 100 years old but in near mint condition, this bag can be firmly dated by its very round shape. Certain interior details also tell us we're looking at a *really* old purse, exquisitely made. Its pearl satin lining is hand-gathered (like the outer pouch) and an attached coin purse is present, lined to match the outer bag. There's hardly a spot anywhere, no stitches are loose and even the frame shows only minimal wear and snaps tightly shut around the prismic crystal clasp. Clearly this purse was used briefly by a lady in mourning, who subsequently stored it away.
Imagine the chic it will add to your favorite "little black dress" or dinner suit. You can carry plenty, too, since the pouch measures about 8" x 7" and expands to almost circular form. Clasp adds almost another inch in height and the strap is about 15".

Painted decoration makes this fragment from a Roman red slip redware vessel particularly interesting. Redware from North Africa was in common use around the Mediterranean in Roman times and to a lesser extent in Rome's European provinces between the 2nd and 4th centuries, which makes this lovely artifact at least 1,600 years old. It measures about 3 1/4" x 2 1/4" and is, I believe, from Roman Tunisia. The former owner acquired it from an English antiquities dealer.

The upper body of a goddess or woman playing a harp - perhaps one of the Muses - remains intact in this fragment from a Roman red slip redware vessel. Redware from North Africa was in common use around the Mediterranean in Roman times and to a lesser extent in Rome's European provinces between the 2nd and 4th centuries, which makes this beautiful artifact at least 1,600 years old. More curved than our other piece of figural redware (a fish), our Muse must be a portion of an ancient bowl. The shard measures 3 1/2" x 3 1/8" and was found in Roman Tunisia. It reached us via an English antiquities dealer.
