In the Tudor Era (1485 - 1558), when this bronze ornament was crafted -- probably to decorate horse harness -- the Renaissance was just beginning in England. Life was still primitive for all but the rich, so it must've belonged to someone of substantial means, most likely a nobleman.

This is an elegantly formed piece, two inches round and highly domed. We know it's meant to embellish leather because of the two prongs at the back, both of which have survived. Time's patina has given rich color to the top, which feels silky to the touch. Being of bronze, it has a nice heft, so would make a wonderful conversation-piece paperweight for your office. Alternatively, if set in a bezel mounting, it would be a stunning pendant for either a man or a woman. We acquired it from a leading antiquities dealer in East Anglia, near Cambridge.

Need an exceptional gift for your Knight in Shining Armor? Here's something very special, sure to delight any man (or woman) with a sense of history. Just think of the stories this sword chape could tell! Made in England soon after the Norman Conquest, the chape dates from the 12th or 13th century (between 1100 and 1299), so it might even have gone on a Crusade or two. It reached us via a leading antiquities dealer in Cambridgeshire.

Measuring 2 1/4" by 1 1/8", it's of particularly elegant form and the bronze has a lovely dark green patination all over. With the addition of a leather thong and interesting hand-made beads from historic Bury St. Edmunds, it's become a real swashbuckler of a pendant - ready to wear (or display on the wall, if your guy isn't the jewelry type).

Could the era that gave us Puck - not to mention Henry VIII, history's most self-indulgent monarch since Nero - be less than playful? Not likely! Little Liz, herself, might have practiced up to fund colonies and armadas with a toy purse on a frame like this one. Beautifully detailed on both sides and measuring about 2" wide by 5/8" high, this was the perfect accessory for a Tudor tot learning to say *MINE* along with *GO TO THE TOWER* - and it's perfect now as a whimsical pendant for an adult or child. Just add a silk cord or velvet ribbon and tie it on as a choker, since they're so trendy this season.

Acquired from a leading English antiquities dealer, this piece is exceedingly rare. Chances are, you'll never see another like it; we haven't.

This medieval buckle was quite a fancy one in its day (the 1300s or 1400s). You can still see vestiges of glittering gold around its holes -- and notice how artistically made it is. I love the scalloped edge and there's even a groove formed in that section, into which the witchy gothic prong settles safely. No doubt that's why its pointed tip is still intact after so many centuries.

Beautifully patinated by time and measuring about 1" by 1 1/8", this treasure remains quite sturdy enough to enjoy as a necklace pendant. You'll be the envy of all when you wear something so exceptional. Just tie on a leather thong or cord - or maybe a ribbon to match your outfit.

There's no charge for insured U.S. shipping and gift-wrap is always free when desired. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!

This opulent and extremely refined medieval bronze buckle was without any doubt handcrafted for an aristocrat. Its shape is lyrical and vestiges of gilding remain strongly present on the plate, still attached to one side of the buckle, showing that very pure gold was originally applied overall.

This is more a display piece than for use as a jewel, although you could carefully wear it on a ribbon or cord for special occasions. While the remaining attachment of plate to buckle seems sturdy, you wouldn't want to risk losing that incredible plate that's still *glittering* under the lamp as I write this. It's truly astounding that this delicate treasure has survived six or seven centuries in such remarkable condition. Size is about 1 1/4" by 7/8" and provenance is our favorite antiquities dealer in England.

Ancient bronze buckles make great conversation-piece pendants for both men and women, so we acquired quite a few from our English antiquities dealer. Most are medieval, but a few are Tudor (English Renaissance) or Georgian. The one shown here dates from the 14th or 15th century. With both plate and pin intact intact (which is rare), it's large - measuring more than 2 inches by about 1 1/4" - and so beautifully patinated that its touch is like silk.

It's still quite sturdy enough to enjoy as a necklace pendant and you'll be the envy of all when you wear something so exceptional. Just tie on a cord or ribbon to match your outfit and you're good to go! To see more photos of this buckle - or pictures of some others, priced from around $40 to $65 - please e-mail.
