An outstanding addition to any Arts & Crafts collection, this fine 19th century basket is in exquisite condition. Even the tinning inside the bowl is so sound you could still serve food in it! Undoubtedly hand-wrought, it's highly dimensional - featuring detailed "wickerwork" outside, ruffled and fluted edges and a graceful handle really comfortable to hold. An enormous amount of work and skill went into creating this treasure. Its measurements are almost 8" long, 8" tall and 6 3/4" wide. On the base, there's a mark that may be CVC for Copper 600 or a maker's mark.
We found this basket at a major antiques fair in Newmarket near Cambridge and its origin is certainly English. Likely dating is circa 1880.

This gorgeous English antique, based on its form, is from the very early 19th century. It could well be Georgian, rather than early Victorian. Later coal hods, also called coal scuttles, had a more vertical helmet shape and swing handles. This hod, as you see, has two fixed handles, one of wood at the back and one of white china above. The mounts appear to be brass and are unusually ornate and graceful. Overall the piece is in excellent condition: beautiful, sturdy and useful. Of course there's some age-appropriate wear and the interior is heavily patinated.
A very special addition to the hearth, it will be perfect to hold kindling, pine cones and such all winter -- and make a great magazine holder in summertime, too, since it's so long: 20 inches back to front. Width is 12 inches and height is 14 inches. Naturally a piece this old is hand-wrought.
