This breathtaking 14-leaf antique fan appears to be of parchment cut into ornate feather-like shapes that were intricately pierced for a lacy effect and further embellished with gilding and penwork. It's clearly hand-made, perhaps by a lady for her own use or as a spectacular gift for someone dear. Fans of this period were often gifts to brides.
I know little about folding fans, but have been told this piece is probably early 19th century Victorian, based on its style and large size. Despite great age, its black-lacquered sticks are intact and well-secured by what appears to be original cord of a pale color matching the leaves. Gilding remains bright and parchment shows only very minor wear, mainly small areas of discoloration on the back. Measuring about 10 1/2" tall and opening to about 19", the fan was acquired by its prior owner about 10 years ago from an English antiques dealer near Cambridge. I've never seen anything remotely like this. If you have, please tell me more!

This splendid antique pin is of a type increasingly hard to find, as you know if you collect Liberty Cymric jewelry. Both the Cymric (heavy silver) and Tudric (pewter) lines commissioned from leading Victorian and Edwardian designers for London's legendary Liberty department store are equally legendary. I believe this impressive and robust dragon brooch to be an early 20th century example. It's clearly in the style of Archibald Knox and his Liberty Cymric designs, but signed C.D. in a diamond shape. In superb condition and ready to fly across your lapel, the piece has great presence and an authentic Celtic look to it. What could be more Cymric than the dragon - symbol of Cymru (Wales)? It's intricate in design and the elaborate chasing and rich patination indicate age. Even the pin is beautifully fashioned and closure is by an early safety clasp. The piece is also reminiscent of the work of famous American Art Nouveau silversmith William Kerr so, if you like all things mystical and Celtic, you'll love this amazing objet d'art. Measurements are approximately 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" and provenance is a London estate.

This luxurious antique trinket or jewelry box would be a gorgeous addition to any woman's vanity, dresser or desk. It's made of glass with a marble-like look, very much in the Lalique manner. Its design is quintessentially Nouveau, featuring sinuous nudes with flowing hair and ribboning draperies. These graceful female figures appear on the side, as well as the lid. They seem to be swimming in a rich green sea and remind me of Klimt's series of "Sea Serpent" paintings. In superb condition, the piece measures about 3 3/4" round at its widest and about 2 1/4" at its tallest. Provenance is an East coast estate and dating is Victorian or Edwardian, circa 1900-1910.

If you follow fashion, you know cameos have made a *huge* comeback. Like pearls, they're classics perfect with today's historically inspired fashions. Ideal for your own collection or as a gift, this example is in pristine condition, free from flaws. It's exquisitely carved, so most likely of Italian origin. The shell's coloration is lovely and light shines beautifully through it. For dating, I'd say 1920s due to the pretty lady's bobbed hair - wich makes the jewel antique by American 75-year standards, not merely vintage.
Framed size is approximately 1 1/4" X 1" and the setting, apparently gold-filled or of unmarked low-carat gold, includes both a bail for wear as a pendant necklace and a pin with a good safely clasp for wear as a brooch. The metalwork is particularly nice, with lots of dimensionality and openwork on the sides as well as the edges

Based on the Edwardian influence apparent in its restrained size and openwork pattern, this lovely silver brooch appears to date from early in the Art Deco period (circa 1920-25). It's an extremely high quality piece, quite weighty for its size and set with rows and rows of sparkling marcasites around a highly polished central black stone (which I believe is natural jet or onyx). In exquisite condition, this dainty pin measures about 1 1/2" wide by a little more than 3/4" tall. It came from the estate of an elderly Englishwoman but is probably French, since England hadn't then gone metric and the Continental dimensions are a straightforward 3.5 cm by 2 cm.

This devastatingly beautiful antique ring features a sparkling aquamarine with an emerald cut - the *ultimate* high-fashion look in its day. That cut was brand-new in the late 19th century, and remained extremely rare until popularized by Art Deco designers. The stone is very clear and fiery, as well as unusually vivid for an aqua dating prior to the routine use of heat treatment to intensify color. Of approximately 2.5 carats, it measures about 3/8" x 1/4".
The dainty mounting is totally Victorian - just look at those scrolled shoulders - and the gold has that lovely rosy cast favored in the 1880s and 1890s. Workmanship is superb, and many inscriptions are inside the shank, including a maker's mark, the 10K hallmark and what appear to be someone's initials. Current size is about a US 5, easily altered since the back of the shank is unadorned.

This opulent cluster ring is tricky to date, but definitely has age, based on the width of the band and the buttery, slightly rosy color of the gold. Its former owner found it at a show, severely in need of professional cleaning, and and was told by her jeweler that it was likely antique. I'm being more conservative, by just calling it vintage. The marquis-cut central emerald is natural, I'm told, and it appears to have the rich hue typical of Columbian emeralds. Around the emerald are 3 stair-stepped rows of small diamonds, arranged in a marquis shape. All stones are open at the back for maximal brilliance. Prongs are of white gold, while the band (hallmarked 10K) is yellow, so it will look good with other jewelry of either color. Current size is a U.S. 6.
This is one of those super-showy rings that make people turn green with envy. They don't need to know how little you paid!

This very elegant set consists of a beautiful ring with marcasites and a 3 CT emerald-cut aquamarine, plus earrings with round brilliant-cut aquamarines of about 1 CT each. The stones have good vivid color, as you see, and those with saturated color are the most valuable. Given the age of these pieces, there's a strong likelihood the stones weren't even heat-treated to improve color, as is routinely done today. Aquamarine, BTW, is the birthstone for your loved ones born in March and healers use it to foster courage and provide protection. Sterling silver mountings set off these aquamarines as prettily as white gold or platinum would - and at a fraction of the cost. Current ring size is about a 7, easily altered to fit since the back of the band isn't ornamented.

This exquisite belt buckle features two huge moonstone cabochons, each 1 1/2" x 1", and a central stone of what looks like chrysoprase or jade. Though we normally think of moonstones as white or colorless, some with peach, apricot, coral and gray hues are found in India, according to Walter Schumann's wonderful "Gemstones of the World." The two in this buckle complement each other beautifully - one being opalescent white with coral tones, while the second is opalescent coral with white tones. The metal is bright gold in color, apparently heavily gilded brass. The piece is clearly artist-made and workmanship is highly impresive, with elaborately chased scrollwork surrounding the bezel-set stones.
These spectacular colors make me think of Klimt paintings and I wouldn't be at all surprised if the buckle is Viennese in origin; unfortunately, all I know for sure about its provenance is that it comes from an East Coast estate. For dating I'm thinking 1880 to 1900. It could be earlier, even quite a lot earlier, but a little bit of an Arts and Crafts influence seems to be present. Condition is lovely, with wear evident only on reverse, and size is pretty monumental: 4 1/4" wide x 1 1/4" tall.
