This fabulously glitzy scarf and tasseled hat set has a 1920s look but actually dates from the 1960s Art Deco Revival period. It's been in my own collection since then, when given to me in girlhood. Condition is like new, since neither piece has been worn more than a few times. The hat has loads of stretch, so will fit anyone, and the scarf measures 66 inches by 6 inches (exactly the ultra-long and narrow scarf shape that's so in fashion right now). No labels are present, so the set may have been custom-made.

This fabulous antique silk purse is quintessential Art Deco in its boldly geometric beadwork - identical on both sides and featuring as the central motif a radiant sun. Even its base and strap are luxuriously beaded. What makes it even more special for us today is that the color scheme is extremely restrained for the period. Featuring only elegant shades of white, ivory and the dark silver of cut steel, it's a carry-with-anything bag you'll use again and again. Its size is unusually ample, too - about 8 1/4" x 5" - and it has expandable sides, as well as an interior pocket for the things you need to find quickly.
Although acquired in England, this treasure looks decidedly French to me, and of course the dating would be 1920s. Alas, it's condition - while impressive for its age - isn't perfect. (It would be museum-quality and enormously expensive, if it were.) There are a few minor bead losses, hard to notice, and the entire outer row of beads appears on close inspection to be missing on both sides. These would be simple repairs, if you're at all good with a needle. Thankfully, the lining of the pouch remains pristine, but the fabric covering the inner frame shows a few areas of rusty staining (which leads me to believe those beads that look like cut steel may be). A good dry cleaner might be able to remove those, or that portion of the bag could be relined. One hinge also needs a screw. When these minor bits of restoration are done, you'll have a bag worth two or three times the money and sure to keep increasing in value.

In fantastic condition, this glamorous antique evening bag from England is a soft shell shape encrusted with gold sequins and gold and pearl beads. Its back is fully sequinned, including a tiny handle you can slide two fingers through (or fasten to a belt). Interior is ivory satin with a label that reads "Hand Made Foreign" and what appears to be original tissue (which has discolored the fabric very slightly, where it touches). The only other flaw I notice is that just a couple -- from thousands of beads -- are coming loose and can be easily secured. Size is about 6" x 6 1/2" and probable dating would be 1920s. The style, as you see, is *very* Art Deco!

Price of $350 includes insured shipping anywhere in the U.S.
The prior owner of this astounding black velvet evening coat inherited it from her aunt, a screenwriter in Hollywood who wore it on Oscars Night during the 1930's. Fittingly, it's deluxe from its tall shirred muff of a collar to the tips of the sleeves and is as beautifully detailed on the back as the front (click through for rear view). However, I think this is a 1920's piece, instead, based on its Egyptian beading motif (trendy at the time of the King Tut exhibition).
Sadly, there's damage to beads and netting here and there; worst is that some oaf let it hang for ages on a wire hanger, fraying the shoulders of the pleated Fortuny silk lining. (Couldn't you just kill? Shades of Mommie Dearest!)
If interested in undertaking restoration of a truly amazing, one-of-a-kind treasure, which I've priced barely over what I paid to acquire it in Santa Fe, please e-mail for further details and pix. It will be museum-quality once restored and, the way this coat is cut, it will fit anyone. Thanks for looking!

Offered are two rare, gorgeous and huge Art Deco shawls, each measuring 7 feet long and 30 inches wide! Sold at auction in England as "Indian Wedding Shawls," these proved upon research to be assuit ... an Art Deco metal fabric that gained popularity at the time of the King Tut exhibition, along with all things Egyptian.
Extremely hard to find, these shawls have a base of off-white netting, around which were wrapped bits of SOLID METAL (gold, brass, copper or perhaps an alloy) hammered thin and cut into small rectangles.
One of these two is in virtually immaculate condition. The other sadly shows some holes and staining I hope can be repaired; if not, the large central panel is fine and could be framed or used for some smaller piece of apparel. Please click through for detail shot.
To confirm availability, order or request additional photos, please e-mail erinharris@earthlink.net - bearing in mind that photographing these is very difficult, due to their massive size and the metal's glare.
Insured U.S. shipping is complimentary and gift wrap is also free on request. Thanks for looking!

An extremely graceful floral pattern of pearl beading appears in high relief on the front of this lovely English evening purse ... which may be antique, not just vintage, because its label reads "EMPIRE MADE." (You'll notice some of our other bags acquired in England are tagged "FOREIGN" and, while I'm not sure exactly when these designations were in use, it was a long, long time ago.) For a truly luxurious look, this bag is also detailed with faux-pearls on back, sides, strap and even the bottom. In marvelous condition for its age, it has only slight areas of staining that are hard to notice. Inside, there's a particularly gorgeous little zipper of bright copper color with a dangly pull. Snap closure is stamped "Star Brand." Dimensions are about 8" x 4 1/2" (plus strap).

This classic vintage handbag can go anywhere, day or night. For evening dazzle, just pin on a sparkling brooch or two. In perfect condition, the purse opens and shuts like a clam shell (very tightly, too) and has a charming scalloped shape with soft folds rising to pleats from its crescent-shaped base. Both top and base are stiffened internally to hold their shape. A coin purse is even included, attached to the satin-lined interior by an elastic cord.
Large enough to be really functional, about 9" wide at base and 7" tall, this bag has twin fabric-covered handles and honestly looks like it's never been used, though it certainly dates from the 1920s or 1930s.
