*So* Art Deco, this chic antique pin from a European collection is crafted of black and white galalith - the French Bakelite (which looks the same but doesn't test). Besides the figure's boldly contrasting feathers and beak, it gains interest from a pert diamond rhinestone accent stone. A large piece, measuring 2 1/2" x 2", it's in lovely condition. The present pinback is probably not original, but works fine and has the benefit of a strong safety clasp. Likely dating would be late 1920s.

Sold; thank you! $75.

From a West Coast etate, this fabulous two-part vintage buckle has the patent number 1965116, which allows to date it precisely to 1934. By American 75-year standards, it will be officially "antique" in just one year, and yet it's seen no use! I was the first person to bend the chrome hook and close the buckle, when making sure it will be sturdy and wearable for you.

The material has been tested and it's genuine bright cherry red catalin Bakelite. The design, fluted and indented on both sides, resembles pretty fans or clam shells. Size is a whopping 3 3/4" by 1 3/4" when the two parts are joined and brackets will take a belt or sash up to 7/8" wide. The only flaws I can find are a small area of discoloration on the chrome fitting in back and, under extremely high magnification, a few teensy-teensy surface abrasions froms storage. To the naked eye, this jewel truly looks brand-new.

A red bracelet in this 1940s "tank track" form sold elsewhere online for more than $400, so treasures of this stype are rare - and what a versatile accessory this will be for you! First off, it's capable of turning any sash into a belt to die for. You could also wear it as a choker necklace or bracelet, tied on with ribbon as is so trendy now.

A whopping 5 1/2 inches long, this jewel is composed of 10 red and 4 ivory white segments in a basketweave pattern, hinged together with military precision. It was designed as a patriotic look during World War II and has the same impact today.

The condition of the plastic is lovely, with all bits present and working smoothly. I'm not sure about the material; it doesn't test as Bakelite, but might be the French version (Galalith), which is the same but doesn't test. On the other hand, it seems just a little too weighty for Bakelite. The metal slides show age-appropriate surface wear, but are perfectly sturdy. Width is about 1 1/8" and provenance is a Florida estate.

This gorgeous Art Deco bangle from a New Orleans estate was hand-carved from butterscotch galalith (casein), the French equivalent of Bakelite. It's in excellent condition, with all carved details sharp, and measures 7/8" at widest point, 1/2" at narrowest point. Inside diameter is 2 1/2" and outside diameter is 3 1/2".

Though I don't claim expertise in the area of early plastic jewelry, I did test this piece with hot water and it smells like "wet wool" - indicating the protein content of Galalith.

It's really a divine bracelet of a type that's getting increasingly hard to find. Please e-mail erinharris@earthlink.net for detail photos.
