Of black Bakelite or some other early plastic, this antique Art Deco brooch is sleek and sophisticated. Accentuating its streamlined form are radiant geometric overlays of finely detailed silver metal (likely chromium or rhodium) at each end. Of impressive size, this dazzler measures about 2 1/2 x 1 1/4 inches. Probable dating is late 1920s and, although it was acquired in England, it looks French to me.

On close inspection, you can see that the pin was assembled in three parts (center plus two triangular tips recessed to receive the silvery ornaments). The black areas within the overlays seem to be enameled, but could be insets of a shinier plastic.

If you're the Moon Goddess type, you'll love this antique brooch and matching scatter pins crafted in celestial blue and silver to look like small planets sprinkled with stars. Their domed, opalescent stones are inset with rhinestones and a silver tassel adds a flapper-worthy 1 1/2" fall of fringe to sway hypnotically with your every step.

Exclusive of fringe, the largest brooch is 1 1/4" round, while the scatter pins are 1" round. The silver metal settings - including rays shooting out from each stone - are heavy and very shiny, likely rhodium (a hard-wearing metal in the platinum family). It's an amazing trio and an amazing value at just $33 per pin!

The domed face of this sparkler is decidedly Late Deco or Early Retro, dating from the 1930s or 1940s. It was found with no back at all, so I had my favorite jeweler run a curvy sterling band through the holes that once held something else - perhaps a brooch pin or a scarf slide mechanism. No one I've consulted has been able to determine precisely what this jewel was originally, but it's ready for a new life as a veryshowy cocktail or dinner ring - at a very appealing price.

All the pretend-pearls and pretend-diamonds are present, although some rhinestones have yellowed a bit with age (an effect I find pretty with the creamy pearls) and close inspection shows one is a replacement smaller than the rest. The stones are set in a white metal with some silver content, to judge from areas of tarnish. No doubt it would polish up to a very bright finish, if you prefer that look. At present it fits my index finger, which is about a US 7, but any jeweler could easily adjust the size up or down.

This stunning large fur or dress clip looks like a full-blown rose encrusted with diamond rhinestones. It's definitely a really old one: antique, not merely vintage. Art Nouveau influence shows in the curvaceous lines of the flower's five petals, and each has beaded details and a teardrop cutout that evoke the Edwardian taste for openwork and refined ornament. Even the metal clip back is prettily decorated with two flower heads and other areas of incised pattern. The only hint of Deco geometry is the use of five bold marquis-cut stones radiating from the center amid a host of sparkling chatons.

Although the back is unitary, the flower petals appear layered, being formed in staggered heights. After this long, some of the stones have inevitably dimmed and yellowed, but this slight color variation serves as proof of great age and holds a charm that an unbroken expanse of clear rhinestones can't match. We've left time's rich patina on the metal clip back, which can of course be polished to a bright finish, if you prefer that look. Of either bronze or heavy brass, it's good and tight, still working perfectly. The back of the flower appears plated with rhodium, a hard-wearing cousin of platinum. Losses of finish here are minor, mainly at points where the prongs touch. Size of the jeweled area is about 1 3/4 by 1 1/2 inches and provenance is a Dallas area estate.

BTW, I just saw in "Allure" magazine a ring with exactly the SAME SHAPE as this clip with its graceful petals that seem to overlap. That one is a $15,000 white, yellow and cognac diamond jewel by H. Stern. Here's the same look for WHOLE LOT LESS!

Have you noticed how hard it is to find a jewel with both Modernist lines *and* sparkle? Those highly stylized, asymmetrical pieces that look so sophisticated are normally all about the metal, or perhaps have one rather dull stone. Here at last as the exception: a piece of Modernist jewelry dazzling enough for a night on the town! Even better, it gives you the versatility to wear it either as a brooch on your favorite dinner suit or as a pendant to enhance a low-cut gown.

Featuring high-quality layered constuction for a very rich effect, the jewel can be interpreted as an abstract floral spray or a fireworks display. From the central element at the base - the flower or swirling skyrocket - three long tendrils emanate, finishing in little leaves or comet tails. I counted 30 stones, all prong-set and open at the back for extra brilliance. They're in excellent undimmed condition, full of fire and likely Austrian. The metalwork is apparently plated with rhodium, a cousin of platinum, which can take a lot of wear and still keep shining. Thus, it takes extremely high magnification to notice any loss of finish (mostly on the brooch clasp, pinstem and pendant bale). The bale, BTW, has the pretty beaded decoration characteristic of earlier jewelry.

This treasure extends 1 3/4 inches in each dimension, so is of can't-miss-it size. Probable dating would be 1940s, although it could be a tad earlier or later. Provenance is a Texas estate.

Perfect with the new ladylike fashions, this dazzling vintage demi-parure from Marvella features whopping faux-pearl beads on a strand about 17 inches long, plus gorgeous dangle earclips 1 1/2 inches long. The company, established in 1911, focused on simulated pearls after 1940 and became quite famous for them. Most are classic, smaller glass pearls, but the dramatic scale of this particular set shows a strong Modernist influence. I'm certain it dates from the 1940s or very early 1950s, since it's actually been in my own family since then.

Each piece is signed Marvella on the attractive rhodium-plated necklace hook and earring clips characteristic of the firm. Provenance is a Texas estate and condition is very nice, though not perfect. Under high magnification, surface flaking can be seen on a few beads and their metal connectors. Since the thread has stretched a bit, restringing the beads soon would be a good idea, although they're perfectly wearable as they are. Length of the necklace can be adjusted by about 2 1/4 inches, depending on where the hook is placed along a "tail" of smaller beads at the back.

No other Marvella jewelry I've found online is comprised of enormous faux-pearls like these, so this set must be rather rare. Certainly, it's highly collectible, as the company has been out of business for decades. Signed Marvella jewels are sure to continue increasing in value.

One of five fabulous Deco buckles we acquired from a Florida estate, this features gorgeous details, great condition and versatile coloration. Measuring 2 inches by almost 3, it's of thermoplastic (probably Bakelite) carved in high-relief with a "safari" look. You'd almost mistake the surface for crocodile leather - and notice the elegantly shaped "prong" that dangles at the center and resembles aged ivory.

This is a one-part buckle that you can stitch to a belt or sash (up to 1 1/4" wide). Alternatively, just run a sash or scarf through it and knot it behind you. It would also be sensational as a scarf slide.

You want to be the gal wearing the most dramatic buckle in the room? Here's what you're looking for! Deeply carved of sizzling red plastic (probably Bakelite), this wonderful Art Deco accessory measures about 3" x 2" when the two parts are fastened and has brackets big enough for belt or sash 1 1/4" wide. Condition is great; the only flaw visible to the naked eye is some rust on the fastener, which would never show when worn and can be easily cleaned away if it bothers you. Provenance is an estate in (wouldn't you know it?) Florida, the Deco Mecca.

What charmers these vintage earrings are. The swirling, organic forms typical of Art Nouveau design not only frame but crown the heads of the adorable fairies. Their hair seems to be made of blossoms.

Whenever I look at these, I think of the fairies in "A Midsummer Night's Dream," my favorite Shakespeare play -- and no doubt the motif was originally created around 1900, when there was a craze for illustrating "Shakespeare's Flowers" in fairy form. However, the earrings date from a later Revival period. The first took place in the Art Deco era, but these are in such fabulous condition that I expect they're from the second Revival in the 1960s. Without high magnification, you can't notice any surface wear to the richly gilded brass. Crafted with posts for pierced ears, these come from a New Mexico estate and are of dramatic size: almost 2" wide by 1" tall. If they were true Victorian Art Nouveau jewels, of course they'd cost at least $100 more.

There's no charge for insured U.S. shipping and gift-wrap is always free when desired. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!
