Layaway terms are available for this purse and for any item priced over $150.

Halley's Comet put on a particularly bright show in 1910, inspiring a craze for comet jewelry (as happened also in 1835). Comet brooches are rare and highly collectible, but this purse is even more unusual. In fact, I've never seen any other beaded bag of this type! While the "British Made" tag tells us it's a manufactured purse, rather than a personal original, there can't have been many of them. Actually this has been a star of my personal evening purse collection for about 20 years, since I acquired it in London. Now that I'm in New Mexico, there's much less occasion to take it out on the town, so someone who can use and enjoy it should own it.

As you see, comet heads and their tails blaze in clear and gold crystal across the front of this bag, against a night-sky background of fine black beads. The reverse is also beaded all over in black and each end has two ribboning trails of clear and gold. Side edges are beaded, as well. The shape, an envelope, was introduced in the Victorian era and in this case it's very spacious. Overall size is about 9 1/2 by 5 inches, so there's loads of room for your essentials. A built-in coin purse is present, as was usual in this period, and there's a mirror compartment. Condition is truly remarkable, given that this bag is nearly 100 years old. VERY few beads are loose or lost and the only damage to the silk is wear at the edge of the coin purse. Tucked inside the side compartment is a little fabric strap, which was used for some purpose unknown to me; at one end this shows traces of a white substance (perhaps glue residue). The snap closure, marked "Made in England", is a little wavy but secure.

Because the patent date of October 31, 1922 appears on these gorgeous antique snap-together cuff links (along with the brand name STA-LOKT), we can date them precisely to the transitional period (1910-1925) between Edwardian and Art Deco styles. This was a time in which elegant craftsmanship met modern technology and these gold-filled and ornately engraved links are as beautiful and functional as ever, showing only a little age-appropriate surface wear. Provenance is a Missouri estate.

Evening bags by Mayor are definitely not thick on the ground. I wasn't able to locate any others online - besides which ours is perfect, apparently never used and still snapped into its glamorous burgundy case of velvety suede that bears the maker's name and logo. The heavy metal mesh is as supple as fabric and lined with ivory silk. The pouch measures about 5" x 4 1/4" and closes with a double chain 6 1/2" long, with beautifully shaped carrying rings an inch round on each end.

If you want a fine early 20th century mesh purse more exceptional the widely available ones by Whiting & Davis and Mandalian, this is your obvious choice. Probable dating is the early 1920s (dawn of the Art Deco era) and provenance is an estate in Florida, where the Mayor's company moved at the height of Deco mania. No jeweler is more closely associated with Deco style than Samuel Getz of Mayor's.

Among the required accoutrements of lavish Victorian and Edwardian weddings were posy holders like this. They featured in the recent historic bridal fashion exhibition in London. Not many of these treasures have survived intact, but here's one from the Chicago estate of a very elderly lady. It measures 2 1/2" long and 1 1/4' wide at the ruffled top. The material is an early plastic, which we tend to forget has been around in various forms since the mid-1900s.

Of course you don't have to be in a wedding to enjoy wearing this unusual and very useful stickpin. Any day is brighter when you wear a flower, and it will stay fresh and fragrant all day.

Here's a truly remarkable set of antique sash slides and ornaments of lavender glass, perfect with the lilac and purple clothing so fashionable now. The beautifully faceted crystal ovals nestle in pretty petal-like settings that appear to be gilt brass or bronze and clearly show an Arts and Crafts influence. The two slides have brackets on the back, while the fixed ornaments have loops to be stitched into place. Size of each is about 1 3/4" x 1" and the glass inserts measure 1 1/4" x 3/4". Condition is lovely, showing only age-appropriate loss of gilding.

Besides adorning a sash, you could wear the slides on a ribbon choker (or on shoes with narrow straps or ribbons) and the fixed ornaments can easily double as pendants, charms or even earrings. You'll get a lot of mileage out of these.

There's no charge for insured U.S. shipping and gift-wrap is always free when desired. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!

Need a gift to delight an Estee Lauder collector (or would that be you)? Here's a spectacular little compact by the legendary Estee. It has a domed shape accented by a vivid faux turquoise cabochon and a gilded surface that's granulated all over! The piece measures 1 1/2" in diameter, plus its pretty patterned clasp. Some solid perfume remains inside, where you can read the maker's logo in the lid.

This beauty shows a little age-appropriate surface wear to the metal, nothing major, and dates from either 1968 or 1973. (It was first made in the former year and reissued in the latter, according to Roselyn Gerson's book on Lauder perfume compacts.) Provenance is a Dallas area estate.

The other compacts of this type that I've seen online are priced at $40 or more (plus shipping), so ours is a super deal. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!
