Since the time of Edward I, who reigned from 1272 to 1307, English monarchs have observed Maundy (or Maunday) Thursday - the day before Good Friday - by distributing specially struck fine silver coins (Maundy Money) and other gifts to the "Deserving Poor" in a major cathedral service. The term "Maundy" derives, like "mandatory," from the Latin "mandatum" - meaning command. It refers to the commandment, "Love one another," expressed by Jesus at the Last Supper when he washed disciples' feet. According to my research, James II (1685-1688) was the last monarch who actually did that, too.
Our array of these coins - drilled long ago for wear as charms or pendants - includes four Georgian examples, three from the reign of George III and one from that of George IV. All are threepence: two from 1762 (sold), one from 1763 (sold) and one from 1823. The monarch's portrait appears on the front of each and, on reverse, the denomination is represented in the style still current, with the number shown beneath a crown.
The number of Maundy Money sets produced each year varied with the monarch's age. For instance, George IV was 60 at Easter in 1823, so he honored 60 worthy recipients - each receiving 4 coins, 1 of every denomination from one penny to four. Thus, besides ours, there are only 59 more 1823 Maundy threepence coins anywhere in existence.
These Georgian coins are estate items discovered during a house clearance in northern England - also the source of our 8 James II and 12 Victorian Maundy Money coins.

These ultra-feminine vintage dangle earrings feature exquisite enamelwork reminiscent of Monet's waterlily paintings (the famed "Nympheas" series). Exquisitely colored in jewel-like hues of blue, green, amber and coral, the earrings show the slight variations in enamel application that demonstrate hand-workmanship.
Probable dating would be late 1960s, based on their neo-Romantic style and the shape of the earwires (which appear original). This is exactly the look hippie girls loved -- and I should know!
The only mark is 925 for sterling. Provenance is a New York estate and condition is extremely nice. I found just one tiny flawed area in the enamel, virtually invisible without a loupe, and only slight surface wear even on the reverses. Overall length is about 1 1/2 inches. The stationary drops, measuring about 1" x 5/8", are suspended from simple and sturdy wire hooks; anything more would be, so to speak, gilding the "lily".

Hand-crafted with great artistry, this very special silver brooch reminds me of Dufy's wonderful paintings of the French Riviera. They share the same gaiety and freedom of line. All that's missing is color, so this would be a moonlit view. This wonderful jewel definitely *is* European, stamped with the old 0900 sterling mark and fitted with quite an unusual early safety clasp. Probable dating is 1920s - while Scott Fitzgerald was in France, writing "Tender in the Night" - and I'll bet the pin was created for a lady much like Zelda. Its shape is early Modernist, size is considerable (about 2" x 1 1/2") and provenance is an East Coast estate.
Condition is lovely, showing only slight age-appropriate surface wear under high magnification. A rich patina remains present on reverse). If you prefer a bright finish, you can easily polish that away or I'll do it for you on request.

Unusual stones, mounted simply but artfully, are a hallmark of the most interesting Arts & Crafts jewelry and this blister pearl brooch from a New England estate is a splendid example. It also shows Art Nouveau influence in the wonderfully curvaceous setting. This jewel dates circa 1890-1910, I feel sure - making it late Victorian or Edwardian. Size is a restrained 1" wide, but this jewel makes a major statement due to the depth and remarkable color of the stone, as well as its graceful silver framing.
I've actually gone nuts for blister pearls lately - just as innovative jewelry designers did when the first of these marvels were cultivated around 1890. We still have two other spectacular blister pearl pieces in stock: a stickpin and a wonderful pendant. Run a search here for "blister pearl" and you'll be led to them. If you're interested in more than one piece, we can work out special pricing.

This impressive vintage bracelet has a lot of presence, due to the size of its segments. Each of the 4 ornate floral plaques measures 1 1/4" square and holds a vivid emerald-cut stone that's prong-set and open at the back. The metalwork is very finely detailed, featuring both repousse and applied decoration. The jewel is unmarked, but probably made of rhodium, a metal in the platinum family which shares platinum's toughness and silvery white no-maintenance shine. Length is about 6 1/2", making it just the right fit for most ladies.
Probable dating would be late Art Deco/Moderne (circa 1935-40) and provenance is a West Coast estate. Condition is super: The glowing stones are tight, the clasp snaps securely and you have to search with a loupe to find age-appropriate wear, apart from superficial scratches.

Here's a stunning vintage ring you can wear on any finger, because it's infinitely adjustable. Its abstract form looks to me like a stylized snake. Hand-crafted with great artistry in Mexico, the ring is richly patinated by time. Arts & Crafts influence is so evident in its construction that probable dating is pre-World War II. Later variations of this style are less graceful, with much more bulbous ends.

Perfect with this season's ladylike fashions, our antique cameo pendant of shimmering mother of pearl is exquisitely hand-carved with the profile of a Victorian beauty whose hair is dressed in the style of the 1870s (caught back with a high bow). Accordingly I believe the piece dates from around that period. Early Arts & Crafts influence is evident in both the fine workmanship and style of mounting. A simple and beautiful bezel setting is fitted around the cameo and finished with a fixed loop. It's hallmarked "Sterling" (rather than the later "925") which also suggests quite early dating.
Total length is a bit more than an inch, condition is excellent and provenance is a Maine estate. This jewel would look superb on an ivory or black ribbon or your favorite antique chain.

Handsome on a man, this ring would also suit a gal who favors a more tailored look. (Think Marlene Dietrich's sort of glamor.) Crafted of sterling silver with gold-washed (vermeil) accents, it coordinates beautifully with jewels and watches of either color. A central panel of 15 pavé-set marcasites adds a bit of restrained sparkle. Hallmarks are 925, plus two others (one of which is presumably the maker's, an "F" in a shield shape). Probable dating is 1930s, provenance is a Maine estate, condition is great and current size is a 7, easily altered by your jeweler since the back of the band isn't ornamented.

This vintage Mexican bangle bracelet is unbelievably easy to wear. The buckle actually works: You simply lift it, slide the other side in and lower the buckle's latch into one of four holes. It adjusts to fit just about any wrist perfectly (up to about 7 inches).
Of hallmarked sterling silver, the jewel is beautifully detailed - accented by the curvy buckle of vermeil or gilt brass, plus two jazzy inlaid stripes of dark blue lapis lazuli. Also indicative of quality, a maker's mark is present. Unfortunately we haven't been able to decipher it; a TC is visible, along with intelligible numbers and the abbreviation MEX for Mexico.
Probable dating is late in the Art Deco/early Moderne era, when many of the most exciting jewelry designs were of Mexican origin. These have been eagerly collected for years and are even more popular today. Provenance is a New York estate.

This finely wrought Victorian brooch is one of the most romantic and beautiful pieces of Art Nouveau jewelry I've ever seen. Dating from around 1900, it features a flowing-haired lady who's more than usually gorgeous and very pertly posed. Beyond the charm of the coquettish figure and lavish floral silver work, the piece gains an enchanting, magical quality from its radiant mother-of-pearl moon. Naturally it has the old "C" clasp right for the period. Its measurements are petite, about an inch round, so it was made for a young lady. Large jewelry was considered vulgar on unmarried women in those days. Condition is superb, with no flaws I've found apart from a little age-related yellowing of the adhesive. You may want your jeweler to clean that (taking care not to damage the patina, unless you want the silver to take on a brightly polished look).
