By Billy Jack for Her, a New York firm designing in the 1970s and 1980s, this glamorous semi-formal dress takes its inspiration from the World War II era. The big-shouldered look was in then, too -- and, like so many gowns worn by Retro film stars, this one has a gracefully shirred bodice that crosses at the midriff and finishes with a jaunty peplum over its ballerina-length skirt. The shape is extremely flattering to any figure, adding curves to those who need them or concealing any excess. An elastic waist and tie-belt ensure perfect comfort through evenings of dining and dancing.
Gathered leg-o-mutton sleeves add further interest, as does that sensational beaded fan at the waist. Billy Jack formal and semi-formal wear is known for its dramatic jeweled accents.
The periwinkle blue fabric drapes and moves like crepe, but has a bit of stretch and is probably a synthetic. The size and care tag is no longer present, but the prior owner believes it's a 3/4 or 5/6. Lying flat, the bust measures 36", waist 22" (stretching to 30") and hip 46". The skirt isn't as narrow as it appears on a hanger; it's meant to be loose and flares slightly. Outer sleeve length is 23.5" and overall length from neck back to hem is about 45".
This is another treasure from the vintage clothing enthusiast who's sizing down, and she kept all her things in lovely condition. I see no flaws here. Even the original shoulder pads are in place (not monster ones, since fabric fullness at the shoulders does most of the job). Most likely dating would be around 1980.

Imagine bumming around the Greek Islands in the 1960s. This vintage shoulder bag is from the estate of a lady who did it. She must have treasured this souvenir greatly, because it's still practically like new.
Its dramatic red-on-black pattern of Greek urns between Greek key borders repeats on both sides and the size is a spacious 15 1/4 by 12 1/2 inches, plus a 34-inch handle and bouncy pom-pom corners. The fabric looks like wool tapestry, but a label (mostly in Greek) says in English that it's cotton and rayon. If you can read Greek, you'll be able to identify the company and its location.

From the collection of a vintage clothing enthusiast who's downsizing, this adorable dress is of seasonless heavy cotton in a sophisticated blue-gray color. It's loaded with interesting seam detail and sparkling hardware.
Starting from the top, there are buttoned-down epaulets on the shoulders, a tab and ring closure for creating a high neck if desired, billowing gored raglan sleeves that narrow to tab and ring closures at the wrists, a long blouson bodice with seamed shaping and three buttons and a little straight skirt to adjust above the hips with more tabs and rings. The shiny silver buttons are about an inch round and the rings range from 1 inch to more than 2 inches tall.
This dress is meant to be very roomy, so most measurements aren't crucial. Obviously there's no waist at all. Bust is 46 inches, hips are about 40 and the one real point of fit -- the inset belt at hipbone level -- is 35 inches (with tabs to make it more snug if you like). Outer length of sleeves is 21.5 inches and total length from back collar to hem is about 41 inches. The label has been removed, so we can't determine maker or size. The former owner believes it's a 5 or 7.
The dress can be laundered -- no need to dry-clean -- and it's in very nice vintage condition. High magnification is required to notice slight surface wear to the metal. I believe there were once shoulder pads that got away; the ones with it now are a lighter blue. (Dress was photographed without pads.)

This lavishly silver-embroidered wrap is pure 1960s exotica, but in like-new condition. I doubt it was worn even once. Certainly crafted somewhere in the Orient, it measures a whopping 105 inches long (including 7-inch fringe at both ends) and is 22 inches wide. The detail is amazing; notice how there are even shadow-stripes you can see through in the unembroidered section, and the reverse is almost as pretty as the front. Its provenance is a Texas estate.
This would be a superb evening wrap, worthy of your loveliest formal gowns, or fabulous for day if you dare, Imagine how dashing it would be this fall over jeans and a black sweater. And, when you aren't wearing it, think of the decor possibilities -- from dining room table topper to bed throw.

Do you dare? "Who dares, wins," they say, so why not take your style to new heights with this sensational vintage Evelyn Varon chapeau? It's of cinnamon-colored "doeskin" wool felt, gracefully shaped in a sort of cross between a fedora, a cloche and a Garbo slouch. The longer side (for casting flirtatious glances beneath) is set with a lavish wheel of feathers adorned with pearls. Vintage hats just don't get any classier and this one's in immaculate condition, although it can't be younger than mid-1960s. That's when the original owner remembers purchasing it from an upscale department store in downtown Fort Worth. Unfortunately for her, she *didn't* dare to wear it much, which is why it's so perfect now. It's marked with two of the most famous names in vintage headwear: Evelyn Varon, whose work is featured in the Hat Museum, and George W. Bollman, whose firm developed the wool felt "doeskin" material from which it's made. The Bollman Hat Co. has been associated with many the world's top designers and brands since early Victorian days and the firm is still operating.

These Victorian or Edwardian gloves from a California estate are in such fabulous condition that I expect they were worn only once -- most likely by a bride -- and then stored carefully away for generations. Not only are there no rips or tears, but there's none of the age discoloration one expects to see. Styled with a highly ornate pattern to cover the back of the hand and plain mesh over the palm, they measure about 9 1/2 inches from the tip of the middle finger to the outer edge of the flared gauntlet. Mesh does stretch a bit, of course, but these will be best for small hands.
Please bear in mind that historic gloves, bags and other fabric creations have almost inevitably picked up some scent of smoke through the years. I don't notice it on these and, if present, a rinse and airing should take care of it. However, I advise those who are allergic (or militant) simply to avoid antique and vintage items made of cloth.

It can be hard to find an afforable vintage evening bag without interior "issues" -- those all-too-common perfume and makeup stains. This one is perfect inside, and also looks perfect outside until you inspect it very closely. A graceful floral and foliate motif shimmers on both sides in elegant black-on-black and there's a beautifully engraved frame with an ornate chain handle. This purse can hold a lot, too. Measuring about 7" x 6" (plus clasp and 12" handle), it's exceptionally roomy for an evening bag.
Acquired from a dealer in the London area, it was probably made in England. The overall form and sleek twist clasp are typical of bags produced soon after World War II. Someone handy with a needle could replace the few missing beads in an hour or two, and matching ones should be quite easy to find since they're classic rounds of black opaque glass.
There's no charge for insured U.S. shipping and gift-wrap is always free when desired. BTW, we currently have quite a few historic evening bags, some as old as Victorian, so please run a search to see the rest if you're a purse collector. Thanks for looking!

This ultra-warm vintage pullover of wool and fluffy mohair was crafted by hand in Iceland for the European export market and acquired in London around 1980. There was a label inside when we got it, but that's somehow gone missing. Equally suitable for a man or a woman, this is a classic pullover style that will fit lots of sizes. Without stretching at all (and it will stretch plenty), it's about 45 inches at its widest and 26 inches long. Colors, as you see, are storm gray and chocolate brown.
Condition of this sweater is fantastic. It can't have been worn much, if at all, so it would make a terrific gift.

This delightful Swiss-made Davos bentwood sled / toboggan is a Pilz model, probably of hickory and iron. One of the first sleds created for use when seated, rather than lying face-down, it's of a type produced originally in the 1860s for competitive racing at St. Moritz. Variations of it are still produced today in oak and steel. In very good condition - sturdy and intact and beautiful - it would make a great coffee table (just add glass), a super showcase for dolls or other toys or a spectacular hanging display in a lodge or cabin. You could of course use it for its intended purpose, too.
The leash, an uncommonly soft sort of rope, and the early black plastic handle could be original, but it's impossible to be sure. Probable dating is Victorian (circa 1870-1900), size is about 31" x 14" x 9" and provenance is an English estate via a dealer near Cambridge.
Because it's oversized, this piece can't be included in our usual free US shipping offer. Delivery price will be based on actual cost of delivery, with no markup. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!

Spectacular, roomy and in sensational condition, this gala evening purse of rich black velvet encrusted with golden embroidery and braided cording came from England but looks decidedly Spanish to me. For convenience of use, it's in a class all its own: Look at that amazing lid that simply slides up and down the cord handles to open and close! Novel handbag forms were characteristic of the 1950s, so that's my best guess on dating.
Despite being about 50 years old, this bag is in immaculate condition. Even the heavy moire silk interior shows no flaws. Size is an ample 7 inches by 7 inches and it's 1 1/2 inches thick at the top, 2 inches at the bottom. The handles are about 19 inches long. There are no labels, so it could very well have been custom-made.
