From the legendary Neiman-Marcus (back in the days when it was independent and truly deluxe), this vintage two-piece suit is a timeless classic, because of its nautical spirit. The graceful gored skirt in dark navy blue is matched to a blouson jacket with sailor-style detailing in creamy winter white. I particularly love the enormous collar and pretty brass buttons.
The outfit would look very classy at work and can be worn by anyone between about a size 2 and 6, because the fabric is a wool knit and elastic is at the waist of each piece. Skirt length is slightly below the knee. Condition is lovely, showing on close inspection only some restitching by hand at a few skirt seams, nothing to detract. The Neiman-Marcus Maisonette label is inside the neck and a label inside the skirt credits designer Joanna Nelson. Provenance is a Dallas area estate and dating would be late 1960s or early 1970s.

Here's a very fine vintage French skirt by Theoreme, that's never been worn -- and the color couldn't be more perfect for this spring. The plastic hangtag is still on one of the front belt loops. Acquired by the former owner at a high-end shop in Europe during the mid-1990s, it's a "trumpet" skirt - gored to flare widely at the bottom, where it segments into sexy panels that float apart in motion to show flashes of shapely leg.
This is marked French size 36, about a US 2-4, but it's very small at the waist for that size. The crucial measurement is the waistband, which is 2 inches wide and only 25 inches long. A lot of us are that small at the natural waistline, but not at the point 2 inches above it, where the rib cage begins to be involved (which is why I'm not keeping this, myself). The button could be moved a bit, but not much. By the time it reaches the hip, the skirt has flared to about 40 inches wide and at the hem it's enormous, with slits about 9 1/2" tall. Length is ballerina (34 inches long).
The label reads THEOREME PARIS MADE IN FRANCE and a tag below that reads FABRIQUE IN FRANCE 60% LIN 40% VISCOSE. It's without lining, since the weight of extra fabric would spoil the drape.
If you're tiny enough through the middle to wear this, it will be a major fashion find: a classic you can enjoy forever. The price is less than a third of what it cost originally.

There aren't too many vintage fashions that really belong in the office, but this one does. It's both young and sophisticated, which are two things Liz Claiborne did very well, indeed, in the 1980s. She's a bit staid now but, well, time passes.
This adorable tomato red linen dress is in amazing condition after 25 years, still as crisp and fresh as when new. Even the shoulder pads and shiny wide black belt are present. A hanger doesn't do it any favors, since you can't see how the skirt moves. It's actually a full circle, so you could add a petticoat. And why not a black silk corsage?
I especially love how it closes with hidden buttons; the only one you see is the big black one at the top. The sleeves are particularly marvelous, too: puffed with little pleats at the sides, not frilly gathers, and long enough not to seem too bare without a jacket. And did you notice all those useful pockets? It has a straight-across one on the bodice, plus two deep angled pockets at the hips.
Size is marked 4 and the actual dimensions are bust 35", waist 26" and overall length 39" (neither mini nor maxi). Hips of course don't matter with a skirt shaped like this.

For urban cowgirls of the Dynasty Era, New York designer Megan Moore created this wonderfully feminine zip-front dress of pastel pink cotton, studded with silver sparkles and lavished with fringe on both front and back yokes. The corset-style mid-section does a great job of slimming, aided by a wide band of elasticized smocking in back. The upper bodice and slim skirt are eased with gathers and the skirt has wonderful deep pockets at its sides. Sleeves are long, to roll up or not. I expect there were shoulder pads originally, but they aren't missed with the extra-broad yoke treatment.
Size is marked 4 and the specific measurements are: bust 35", waist 27" (plus a little stretch), hip 38" and overall length from beneath back collar to hem about 34". It's hand-hemmed (very nicely), so may have been shortened at some time. Condition is very good; the dress has been gently worn, incurring no damage. Even the elastic is still tight. The color is a little lighter than the camera captured; it's more a bubblegum pink, and the fabric has a slightly nubby texture. This dress would've been quite expensive in its day, since Moore sold in upscale boutiques. She's still designing in New York.

The Hachi name, as you know, is closely associated with the late Princess Diana. A beaded evening gown he created for her took top price (more than $70,000) at the personal apparel auction she was organizing at the time of her death. She wore it often between 1983 and 1989 and it's on display now at Kensington Palace, on loan from a museum.
That said, a beaded dress by Hachi is of more than idle interest -- especially since I can't figure out what became of him. Evidently he isn't designing now.
Our beautiful example of his artistry is in such pristine condition that it can't have been worn much. It's another treasure we recently got from a vintage clothes hound who's downsizing. Probably from the late 1980s, since the shoulder pads aren't enormous (as they were earlier in the decade), the gown is a sleek 48-inch column of silk crepe with a diagonally cut dropped waist. Within the center of the neck, there's a fabric-covered weight to ensure that it drapes properly -- lovely detail, but the loveliest is of course the giant sunburst of beads that extends for more than a foot over the right shoulder.
There's no size tag, which leads me to suspect the dress was custom-made. Its bust measures 34 inches, waist 28 and hip more than 40, because of the gathers. Outer sleeve length is 22. I believe it will work out for anyone who's a size 2 to 5, but do please check your measurements. There's no lining, since this is a fabric you want to flow very smoothly, skimming past the waist but caressing the curves. The spicy color strikes me as somewhere between cinnamon and clove.

This gorgeous designer coat from Paul Costelloe's Dressage line was my final shopping mistake before moving back from England. I adore it, but have finally accepted that I'll never wear it, because brown makes me look like I died three weeks ago. My goof can be your great good fortune, if brown tones suit your coloring and you enjoy a fabulous bargain. I'm offering this for this less than a third of what I paid in 1995 at Jane (the posh fashion shop across from the clock tower in Newmarket.)
Sizing is technically US 6 (Brit 10), but really this would fit US sizes 2-8, with a little adjustment of the sleeve length -- or it's a cute look to roll them and show the pretty lining. Overall length from neck to hem is 34 inches, so it's 3/4 to 7/8 length, depending on your height. The fabric is luscious: a nubby tweed that's mostly lightweight wool and feels ratherlinen-like. It's the perfect weight for autumn, spring and winter's warmer days. Lovely details include bone buttons, four patch pockets (chest and hip level) and ever-so-scrumptious linings (solid inside the coat and striped inside the sleeves). If you've worn Costelloe, I don't have to tell you how comfortable the cut always is. Costelloe, BTW, trained in the U.S. with Anne Fogarty, by whom we have an elegant vintage dress right now. You might want to search that out.

Cachet fashions still sell in upscale stores like Nordstrom, but this fabulous dress dates from the 1980s, when Bari Protas was designer. It's sheer romance, from the ruffled organdy collar and puffed sleeves lined with tulle to the ballerina-length circle skirt with its shimmery black petticoat that matches the wide sash. Nothing could be more perfect for a wedding or garden party.
Tagged size 3/4, it would also fit someone a bit bigger. The deep V neck allows more room than the 35-inch bust would indicate; the skirt's so full that hip size doesn't matter; and the elasticized waist stretches to 28 inches. Total length from back of neck to hem is about 48 inches.
This is another treat we acquired from a vintage clothing hound who's downsizing. Condition is so lovely it can't have been worn much. You'd honestly mistake it for new, although it's at least 20 years old.

The strong-shouldered 1980s look is the trendiest thing going in fashion today. Why not have the real thing, instead of a modern copy?
Because this gorgeous dress is a wrap-around, all it takes to look drop-dead gorgeous is fastening one tiny button and tying the sash! In about three secs, you'll be ready for an important day or evening (but as oomfortable as if you had a nightgown on).
Of aqua blue silk in a graceful tone-on-tone abstract pattern, this Retro-styled dress has a figure-flattering draped bodice, tapering sleeves gathered at the tops and poofed by little pads and a fluttery flared skirt with inset pockets. It's yet another treasure we were lucky to get from a vintage clothing enthusiast who's downsizing.
In addition to the Goldwaters store label, there are tags telling us the fabric is pure silk, the dress was made in Hong Kong and the size is 4. The waist has elastic in back, so it would probably fit a 5/6, too. The waist is 26" (stretching to almost 30"), hip is about 38" and bust is about 36" -- but, with that deep V neck, you could be a little bigger. Outer sleeve length is 23" and total length from neck back to hem is about 45", which unless you're very tall would be ballerina length. The sash is 41" long and 4" wide.

This dress is, without a doubt, the most difficult-to-photograph item I've ever run across. I'll keep trying for better but, in the meantime, please follow the description closely. The dress is gorgeously detailed, but so dark that very little reveals itself to the camera.
Starting from the top, there's a V neck framed by artful pleats. Below this, a central seam is shirred to below waist level. Somehow this manages to end in an inverted pleat at the front of the skirt -- and yet the rest of the skirt is seamed onto the bodice in a lovely curving shape that reaches up to the base of the shirring like twin petals. Even better, this dropped waist is traced out with tiny, tiny dressmaker cording. For further detail, even the 3/4 length sleeves finish with fine tucks that angle them slightly inward. More tucks -- good long ones -- shape the back bodice, where the dropped waist lies straight across with its fine cording.
All of this is very easy to see in person, I assure you. You also can't miss the grace of this dress in motion. I'm not a specialist in fabrics, but it feels and behaves like crepe. Evidently it was never completed, since there's a spot for a short zipper on the right side, but no zipper, and the bottom of the skirt has binding but no hem. Held to the light, it shows none of the teensy holes that would indicate prior hemming. At the moment, it reaches almost to my ankles, so it will be no prob to achieve the length right for you.
With the right jewelry (and perhaps I can help), this would be easily the most elegant dress in the room, day or night. Its floaty shape allows it to fit many sizes and the fabric's weight will subtly bring out your curves. The bust will fit up to 38 inches, waist 30 inches and hip well past 40 inches, since the skirt is full.

By Billy Jack for Her, a New York firm designing in the 1970s and 1980s, this glamorous semi-formal dress takes its inspiration from the World War II era. The big-shouldered look was in then, too -- and, like so many gowns worn by Retro film stars, this one has a gracefully shirred bodice that crosses at the midriff and finishes with a jaunty peplum over its ballerina-length skirt. The shape is extremely flattering to any figure, adding curves to those who need them or concealing any excess. An elastic waist and tie-belt ensure perfect comfort through evenings of dining and dancing.
Gathered leg-o-mutton sleeves add further interest, as does that sensational beaded fan at the waist. Billy Jack formal and semi-formal wear is known for its dramatic jeweled accents.
The periwinkle blue fabric drapes and moves like crepe, but has a bit of stretch and is probably a synthetic. The size and care tag is no longer present, but the prior owner believes it's a 3/4 or 5/6. Lying flat, the bust measures 36", waist 22" (stretching to 30") and hip 46". The skirt isn't as narrow as it appears on a hanger; it's meant to be loose and flares slightly. Outer sleeve length is 23.5" and overall length from neck back to hem is about 45".
This is another treasure from the vintage clothing enthusiast who's sizing down, and she kept all her things in lovely condition. I see no flaws here. Even the original shoulder pads are in place (not monster ones, since fabric fullness at the shoulders does most of the job). Most likely dating would be around 1980.
