This elegant vintage evening ensemble in superb condition features a wrap-around circle skirt and butterfly-sleeved blouse with elastic at the waist. It can be worn by anyone from about a size 2 to 6, because the fit is adjustable. The shimmering fabric drapes beautifully and is so skillfully woven that the red on black floral pattern reverses in such detail you could practically wear the skirt either way. A "dry clean only" tag is present, but I've found no marks to identify manufacturer, country of origin, specific size or fabrication. Probable dating would be 1950s. It was already vintage when I acquired it while living in London during the early 1980s. I'm regretfully letting it go because there are so few dress-up occasions in New Mexico. *sigh*

If you choose this wonderful outfit, be sure to check out our vintage and antique evening bags; we have several Retro black purses that would be stunning with it and special pricing can be worked out, whenever you want more than one item.

Because Lyn Lundie remains among England's leading designers of made-to-measure bridal and other special occasion wear, this ensemble is difficult to date. However, it's been in my personal collection since the early 1980s and was purchased as vintage then (in a London area antique shop). The look is Art Deco, obviously, but it can't reasonably be older than 1960s or 1970s. I haven't been able to determine when she went into business, so please tell me if you know. Regardless of its age, the ensemble is sheer loveliness - consisting of a lace-edged A-line ivory slip, plus the gauzy floral overdress matched to a neck ruffle and a lovely little hat with flowers. Pink ribbons feature prominently just about everywhere. It may have been made for a second-time-around bride, for one of her attendants or simply for some festive event like a summer dance or garden party.

Fit really isn't a issue with such a free-floating style. It measures 38 inches at the bust and 40 at the dropped waist (hip level). Overall length is also about 40 inches. At the back of the slip, a "Lyn Lundie London" label appears (although I understand she now operates from Harrow-on-the-Hill). It's a bit heartbreaking to let this outfit go, but few occasions in my present life in New Mexico are worthy of it.

Just a one-piece 1920s-style tea dress made by Lundie in the 1980s is being offered at an English resale site for nearly $500 (245 pounds sterling), so our regular price for the 4-piece set represents exceptional value and this month's sale price is a steal.

Worthy of the gals in "Grease," this outfit is just what you need for any fifties-style event -- or just for the fun of wearing Retro. The skirt's a full circle of metallic patterned fabric so crisp it can stand up by itself and the jacket is a classic zip-on windbreaker, also very crisp. I doubt these treasures have been worn more than a couple of times, if that.

The skirt is ballerina-length (30 inches) on a 26-inch buttoned waistband with zipper below. No tags are on that, but the jacket is marked Barbara Rogers for Power Chute. Size small and hand-washable, the jac may be of a somewhat later date, but its style is pure 50s and the color and texture match to the skirt is excellent. Just add a top with a turtleneck or a Peter Pan collar, bobby socks and loafers or Oxfords to complete the 50s look. The jacket will be very useful as a separate piece, too.

Lavished with sequins and beads, this glamorous snap-pouch from an English dealer near Cambridge was obviously hand-made. Its curvy Paisley-like pattern shows Art Nouveau influence and suggests the bag was made before 1920, since Deco designs were more angular. I believe it dates from the World War I era (1914-1918), during the transitional period between Edwardian and Art Deco styles.

The pouch part of the purse is spacious (almost 8 by 6 inches) and there's a beaded loop handle 6 inches long, meant to be fastened to a belt or sash for dancing. Condition is lovely, relative to age. The interior is absolutely marvelous: of moire silk with a side compartment and no stains or other damage. The back does show some sequin losses, easily replaced since black sequins are widely available, and a few of the teensy black beads are loose (but not lost). I'd fix it, myself, but I'm not much of a seamstress. Someone more skilled could restore its full glory in just a few minutes.

You can't judge this "book" by its cover - but it's one you'll open again and again! The case for our elegant book-shaped mother of pearl compact is a book in its own right: "bound" in rich burgundy cut velvet and with "pages" incised in the gilded edges. What an amazing lot of care La Mode put into packaging its nicest purse accessories - and no wonder these were romantic gifts treasured for generations.

The compact within, about 2 1/2" tall, 2 1/4" wide and half an inch tall, is of extremely high quality: made of heavy gilt brass surfaced thickly with a gorgeous slice of luminous mother-of-pearl and fitted with a very fine metal-framed, beveled mirror. Some powder remains behind the loose face powder well, and there's pressed rouge, too, (a beautiful shade) plus a signed puff (used). There's even a wonderful printed enclosure that reads: "Save this label!" and conveys the Massachusetts-based Ripley & Gowan Company's promise of endless rouge refills for 25 cents' worth of stamps and a new puff for 10 cents extra. This is really a CUTIE - and, if you collect antique and vintage compacts, you know how rare it is to find all these bits still together after decades!

The luxurious box in which you'll love displaying these items measures about 4 3/4" x 3 5/8". At one end, its cardboard edges have separated and could be easily reglued, if that bothers you. Of course there's some loss of gilding to the edges after so long and a few small spots are on the creamy satin that lines the inside cover. The other interior fabric is a beautiful gold cut velvet, in great shape like the exterior. The compact's lid lifts from the bottom and snaps shut securely. Gilding shows age-appropriate surface wear (mainly on the back), but I find no other problems. Probable dating would be 1930s. Book-shaped compacts were popular then, the company began making compacts at that time and this *does* have a Late Deco look. Provenance is a Dallas area estate.

This is one of my all-time favorite vintage evening bags. It's ever so girly with its ruffled and pleated front, plus that huge clasp like a rhinestone doorknob! It's a great size, too: big enough to be functional (almost 7 1/2" by 7" plus clasp and handle). Both sides of the interior have flaps to contain things you want to find easily.

This bag is English (presumably, since we got it there) and very finely made, so it's odd there's no label. That fact persuades me it's older than one might think. Given its excellent condition, it could easily be mistaken for new; however, my best guess on dating would be 1950s or 1960s. Because the world went "logo mad" around 1970, labels have been essentially universal since that time and they were pretty common even earlier. Regardless of how long it's been around, this bag has seen very little action; the fabric, which appears to be a heavy satin or silk, is virtually pristine.

Perfect when your look is Understated Glamor, our circa 1950 clutch draws its drama from black on black: the glitter of faceted "jet" against the gleam of the heavy silken fabric. These pretend jewels are wonderfully geometric, a parade of alternating teardrops and rondels set in gilded frames. Not only sophisticated but spacious enough to be genuinely useful (about 8 1/2" by 6"), the bag is in lovely condition both inside and out. Top edge of gilding shows light wear only under high magnification. The maker is Garay and provenance is a Dallas area estate.

This is a wonderful vintage evening bag - stylish enough for big events and yet also big enough to be useful: about 9 inches wide, 6 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches deep. To keep your hands free for greeting, eating and dancing, there's a super-long 44-inch braided cord to wear on your shoulder or across your chest like a bandolier. Detailed on the front with shirred fabric that radiates in pleats from a row of sparkly diamond rhinestones, the bag has a dramatic "Dynasty" look and likely dates from the glitzy 1980s. It reached us from a collection in England but was made in Hong Kong by Debonair. The fabric isn't named on the label, but feels like silk (with something soft and cushiony between the layers). Condition is lovely, inside and out. The only flaws I can find, besides a little flattening of the pleats from storage, are a couple of small spots at the base; they're hard to notice, but a good dry cleaner or a dab of spot remover should zap them away, if they bother you.

Paving the front of this elegant English evening purse are clear sequins, each secured by a tiny black bead, and more black beads form a gorgeous flower-and-leaf design in high relief. Even the back has beading, for a total look of sheer luxury. The bag's shape is fascinating, too; its front panel lifts to reveal a deep pouch of heavy black satin, which recloses simply by folding over - a clever design that holds a *lot*. Unfolded, it measures about 9" x 9 1/2" and, folded, it's a sleek 5" x 9 1/2".

Although its condition is like new, its "EMPIRE MADE" label suggests significant age. While I'm not sure exactly when this designation was in use, it's been a while since England regarded itself as Imperial. Empires pretty much went "out" right after World War II. Foldover bags were very popular around 1950, too, so that adds up for dating. Provenance of this beauty is an antiques dealer near Cambridge in East Anglia.

You couldn't dance the Charleston in slippers or high-heeled pumps -- no, ma'am; they'd fly right off your feet. That's why this style of footwear was favored by flapper girls of the 1920s. The heels were relatively low and straps across the instep kept them on, no matter how hard you kicked up your heels. Rediscovered as old store stock in the 1970s, these exquisitely made brown Mary Janes entered my personal collection then, along with several other pairs. I've worn them only a few times, so they're still practically pristine. Notice those wonderful engraved buckles, the fancy cutwork details and the inset accents of snakeskin or some other reptile. These are *soooo* jazzy!

Size is about a U.S. ladies' 5, so these are for you if you're a Cinderella with tiny feet. Of course they'd also be marvelous dress-up shoes for a girl; the equivalent child's size is 2 1/2 - 3 and the heels aren't too high for a special young lady.
