Imagine bumming around the Greek Islands in the 1960s. This vintage shoulder bag is from the estate of a lady who did it. She must have treasured this souvenir greatly, because it's still practically like new.

Its dramatic red-on-black pattern of Greek urns between Greek key borders repeats on both sides and the size is a spacious 15 1/4 by 12 1/2 inches, plus a 34-inch handle and bouncy pom-pom corners. The fabric looks like wool tapestry, but a label (mostly in Greek) says in English that it's cotton and rayon. If you can read Greek, you'll be able to identify the company and its location.

Do you dare? "Who dares, wins," they say, so why not take your style to new heights with this sensational vintage Evelyn Varon chapeau? It's of cinnamon-colored "doeskin" wool felt, gracefully shaped in a sort of cross between a fedora, a cloche and a Garbo slouch. The longer side (for casting flirtatious glances beneath) is set with a lavish wheel of feathers adorned with pearls. Vintage hats just don't get any classier and this one's in immaculate condition, although it can't be younger than mid-1960s. That's when the original owner remembers purchasing it from an upscale department store in downtown Fort Worth. Unfortunately for her, she *didn't* dare to wear it much, which is why it's so perfect now. It's marked with two of the most famous names in vintage headwear: Evelyn Varon, whose work is featured in the Hat Museum, and George W. Bollman, whose firm developed the wool felt "doeskin" material from which it's made. The Bollman Hat Co. has been associated with many the world's top designers and brands since early Victorian days and the firm is still operating.

These Victorian or Edwardian gloves from a California estate are in such fabulous condition that I expect they were worn only once -- most likely by a bride -- and then stored carefully away for generations. Not only are there no rips or tears, but there's none of the age discoloration one expects to see. Styled with a highly ornate pattern to cover the back of the hand and plain mesh over the palm, they measure about 9 1/2 inches from the tip of the middle finger to the outer edge of the flared gauntlet. Mesh does stretch a bit, of course, but these will be best for small hands.

Please bear in mind that historic gloves, bags and other fabric creations have almost inevitably picked up some scent of smoke through the years. I don't notice it on these and, if present, a rinse and airing should take care of it. However, I advise those who are allergic (or militant) simply to avoid antique and vintage items made of cloth.

It can be hard to find an afforable vintage evening bag without interior "issues" -- those all-too-common perfume and makeup stains. This one is perfect inside, and also looks perfect outside until you inspect it very closely. A graceful floral and foliate motif shimmers on both sides in elegant black-on-black and there's a beautifully engraved frame with an ornate chain handle. This purse can hold a lot, too. Measuring about 7" x 6" (plus clasp and 12" handle), it's exceptionally roomy for an evening bag.

Acquired from a dealer in the London area, it was probably made in England. The overall form and sleek twist clasp are typical of bags produced soon after World War II. Someone handy with a needle could replace the few missing beads in an hour or two, and matching ones should be quite easy to find since they're classic rounds of black opaque glass.

There's no charge for insured U.S. shipping and gift-wrap is always free when desired. BTW, we currently have quite a few historic evening bags, some as old as Victorian, so please run a search to see the rest if you're a purse collector. Thanks for looking!

Spectacular, roomy and in sensational condition, this gala evening purse of rich black velvet encrusted with golden embroidery and braided cording came from England but looks decidedly Spanish to me. For convenience of use, it's in a class all its own: Look at that amazing lid that simply slides up and down the cord handles to open and close! Novel handbag forms were characteristic of the 1950s, so that's my best guess on dating.

Despite being about 50 years old, this bag is in immaculate condition. Even the heavy moire silk interior shows no flaws. Size is an ample 7 inches by 7 inches and it's 1 1/2 inches thick at the top, 2 inches at the bottom. The handles are about 19 inches long. There are no labels, so it could very well have been custom-made.

Lavished with sequins and beads, this glamorous snap-pouch from an English dealer near Cambridge was obviously hand-made. Its curvy Paisley-like pattern shows Art Nouveau influence and suggests the bag was made before 1920, since Deco designs were more angular. I believe it dates from the World War I era (1914-1918), during the transitional period between Edwardian and Art Deco styles.

The pouch part of the purse is spacious (almost 8 by 6 inches) and there's a beaded loop handle 6 inches long, meant to be fastened to a belt or sash for dancing. Condition is lovely, relative to age. The interior is absolutely marvelous: of moire silk with a side compartment and no stains or other damage. The back does show some sequin losses, easily replaced since black sequins are widely available, and a few of the teensy black beads are loose (but not lost). I'd fix it, myself, but I'm not much of a seamstress. Someone more skilled could restore its full glory in just a few minutes.

You can't judge this "book" by its cover - but it's one you'll open again and again! The case for our elegant book-shaped mother of pearl compact is a book in its own right: "bound" in rich burgundy cut velvet and with "pages" incised in the gilded edges. What an amazing lot of care La Mode put into packaging its nicest purse accessories - and no wonder these were romantic gifts treasured for generations.

The compact within, about 2 1/2" tall, 2 1/4" wide and half an inch tall, is of extremely high quality: made of heavy gilt brass surfaced thickly with a gorgeous slice of luminous mother-of-pearl and fitted with a very fine metal-framed, beveled mirror. Some powder remains behind the loose face powder well, and there's pressed rouge, too, (a beautiful shade) plus a signed puff (used). There's even a wonderful printed enclosure that reads: "Save this label!" and conveys the Massachusetts-based Ripley & Gowan Company's promise of endless rouge refills for 25 cents' worth of stamps and a new puff for 10 cents extra. This is really a CUTIE - and, if you collect antique and vintage compacts, you know how rare it is to find all these bits still together after decades!

The luxurious box in which you'll love displaying these items measures about 4 3/4" x 3 5/8". At one end, its cardboard edges have separated and could be easily reglued, if that bothers you. Of course there's some loss of gilding to the edges after so long and a few small spots are on the creamy satin that lines the inside cover. The other interior fabric is a beautiful gold cut velvet, in great shape like the exterior. The compact's lid lifts from the bottom and snaps shut securely. Gilding shows age-appropriate surface wear (mainly on the back), but I find no other problems. Probable dating would be 1930s. Book-shaped compacts were popular then, the company began making compacts at that time and this *does* have a Late Deco look. Provenance is a Dallas area estate.

This is one of my all-time favorite vintage evening bags. It's ever so girly with its ruffled and pleated front, plus that huge clasp like a rhinestone doorknob! It's a great size, too: big enough to be functional (almost 7 1/2" by 7" plus clasp and handle). Both sides of the interior have flaps to contain things you want to find easily.

This bag is English (presumably, since we got it there) and very finely made, so it's odd there's no label. That fact persuades me it's older than one might think. Given its excellent condition, it could easily be mistaken for new; however, my best guess on dating would be 1950s or 1960s. Because the world went "logo mad" around 1970, labels have been essentially universal since that time and they were pretty common even earlier. Regardless of how long it's been around, this bag has seen very little action; the fabric, which appears to be a heavy satin or silk, is virtually pristine.

Perfect when your look is Understated Glamor, our circa 1950 clutch draws its drama from black on black: the glitter of faceted "jet" against the gleam of the heavy silken fabric. These pretend jewels are wonderfully geometric, a parade of alternating teardrops and rondels set in gilded frames. Not only sophisticated but spacious enough to be genuinely useful (about 8 1/2" by 6"), the bag is in lovely condition both inside and out. Top edge of gilding shows light wear only under high magnification. The maker is Garay and provenance is a Dallas area estate.

Paving the front of this elegant English evening purse are clear sequins, each secured by a tiny black bead, and more black beads form a gorgeous flower-and-leaf design in high relief. Even the back has beading, for a total look of sheer luxury. The bag's shape is fascinating, too; its front panel lifts to reveal a deep pouch of heavy black satin, which recloses simply by folding over - a clever design that holds a *lot*. Unfolded, it measures about 9" x 9 1/2" and, folded, it's a sleek 5" x 9 1/2".

Although its condition is like new, its "EMPIRE MADE" label suggests significant age. While I'm not sure exactly when this designation was in use, it's been a while since England regarded itself as Imperial. Empires pretty much went "out" right after World War II. Foldover bags were very popular around 1950, too, so that adds up for dating. Provenance of this beauty is an antiques dealer near Cambridge in East Anglia.
