Paving the front of this elegant English evening purse are clear sequins, each secured by a tiny black bead, and more black beads form a gorgeous flower-and-leaf design in high relief. Even the back has beading, for a total look of sheer luxury. The bag's shape is fascinating, too; its front panel lifts to reveal a deep pouch of heavy black satin, which recloses simply by folding over - a clever design that holds a *lot*. Unfolded, it measures about 9" x 9 1/2" and, folded, it's a sleek 5" x 9 1/2".

Although its condition is like new, its "EMPIRE MADE" label suggests significant age. While I'm not sure exactly when this designation was in use, it's been a while since England regarded itself as Imperial. Empires pretty much went "out" right after World War II. Foldover bags were very popular around 1950, too, so that adds up for dating. Provenance of this beauty is an antiques dealer near Cambridge in East Anglia.

You couldn't dance the Charleston in slippers or high-heeled pumps -- no, ma'am; they'd fly right off your feet. That's why this style of footwear was favored by flapper girls of the 1920s. The heels were relatively low and straps across the instep kept them on, no matter how hard you kicked up your heels. Rediscovered as old store stock in the 1970s, these exquisitely made brown Mary Janes entered my personal collection then, along with several other pairs. I've worn them only a few times, so they're still practically pristine. Notice those wonderful engraved buckles, the fancy cutwork details and the inset accents of snakeskin or some other reptile. These are *soooo* jazzy!

Size is about a U.S. ladies' 5, so these are for you if you're a Cinderella with tiny feet. Of course they'd also be marvelous dress-up shoes for a girl; the equivalent child's size is 2 1/2 - 3 and the heels aren't too high for a special young lady.

Rediscovered as old store stock in the 1970s, these adorable Mary Janes from the flapper era entered my personal collection then, along with several other pairs. I've worn only them a few times, so they're still practically pristine. Notice how cute the buttons that close the straps are; I think they're Bakelite. I love the subtle taupe and tan color combo, too.

Size is about a U.S. ladies' 5, so these are for you if you're a Cinderella with tiny feet. Of course they'd also be marvelous dress-up shoes for a girl; the equivalent child's size is 2 1/2 - 3 and the heels aren't too high for a special young lady.

On hold. $39 SALE. Was $55.

This eye-catching English evening purse is doubly dazzling, featuring both rhinestone trim and silver lame fabric. And, unlike many evening purses, it's big enough to be really useful. It measures about 7" x 7 1/4" and works equally well as a clutch or a shoulder bag. Its 28" chain tucks smoothly away through grommets when you don't need it.

This beauty is in lovely condition, with no dulling of its rhinestones or silvertone hardware and only a few little bits of staining inside. The fabric lining, champagne-colored, has a moire pattern and a large side pocket. Probable dating would be 1950s or 1960s.
