Great coffee table book for the art lover or gourmet!
Subtitled "A Cookbook by Master Chefs Inspired by Paintings in the National Gallery of Art," this is the 1995 first edition: a 144-page hardback featuring 65 gorgeous artworks and the recipes they led top chefs to create.
Imagine yourself having lunch in Bonnard's or Pissarro's garden -- on a picnic with Toulouse-Lautrec -- at a tea party with Mary Cassatt -- or dining in Tangier with Matisse. The menus and recipes are by such culinary notables as Julia Child, Alice Waters and Rick Bayless. There's even a Renaissance feast by Lorenza de'Medici, designed to honor her oft-painted forebears.
Condition of this remarkable book is very good, showing only minor wear to the dust cover. The original $28 price tag appears on the back. Contents are clean and tight, with no inscriptions. It was published by Collins in San Francisco and has long been out of print.

This extravagantly illustrated hardcover volume discusses the return of ornamentation to modern design -- which continued with a bang, eventually making Post-Modernism a household word.
Authors Robert Jensen & Patricia Conway could certainly spot an emerging trend. No wonder their book (subitled "The New Decorativeness In Architecture & Design") has become a classic, used for teaching and cited in connection with art exhibitions. It includes 485 photographs, 309 in full color, plus 35 architectural drawings, and runs to 297 pages. There are sections on Architecture & Ineriors; The Decorative Crafats; Furnishings & Lighting; and Patterning, Decoration & Usable Art.
Condition of this book is very good. Its contents are clear and tight, with no inscriptions or other marks. (Since it's often used as a text, markings are sadly common on lower-priced copies.)The dust jacket does show wear and a short rip on the back. Underneath, there's slight discoloration along the blue binding's outer edges.
Published at $40 by Clarkson N. Potter, Inc., ORNAMENTALISM has long been out of print. Measuring 10 x 10 inches, it's very heavy for its size.

Whether you want to enhance your own drawing and painting skills or simply learn more about the techniques artists use, these books will do it for you. Lavishly illustrated with attractive and instructive images, they're comprehensive resources worthy to be called encyclopediae.
Included are Jeremy Galton's "The Encyclopedia of Oil Painting Techniques" (192 pages), Hazel Harrison's "The Encyclopedia of Watercolour Techniquees" (192 pages) and Ian Simpson's "The Encyclopedia of Drawing Techniques" (208 pages). All the authors are artists and art educators working in the United Kingdom, where the series originated.
Each hard-bound volume measures about 9.25 inches square and was published in London at 16.95 pounds sterling -- equivalent to about US $32 or $96 for all three. Although they date from 1992, their condition is fantastic. There's no more than the light shelf wear you'd expect to expect to see on dust covers in a bookshop, so these would make splendid gifts if you can part with them -- and a wonderful value at less than $20 each.

Layaway fell through; back on the market ...
Children in Late Victorian and Edwardian times were the first to enjoy the gorgeous Fairy Books edited by Andrew Lang: 12 anthologies of fairytales from around the world, each named for a different color. The volumes debuted between 1889 and 1910, so this 1901 book appeared about midway through the series. By then, many illustrations were in color and the covers had become works of art. Here, in a gilded and lyrical Art Nouveau swirl, a Puckish lad amid toadstools offers an enormous violet to goddess-like fairies flying above in the moonlit, starry sky. More fairies stand sentinel beneath violets on the gilded spine. Inside, the gilt-edged pages include 7 full-page color plates in the medievalist Art Nouveau style so popular then, plus an abundance of full-page b/w plates (33) and in-text illustrations (25). The artist for this book (and many others) was H.J. Hunt.
Because of its great beauty (and scarcity, compared to some other volumes in the series), collectors of fine antiquarian books pay more than $2,300 for a first edition of The Violet Fairy Book, provided it’s in exceptional condition. Ours is a great deal more affordable, because it has a few problems. Fortunately, they don’t affect the stunning colored plates which comprise so much of its value.
To begin with what’s right, the publisher’s original binding of gilded violet cloth is still firmly attached; the gilded page edges remain brilliant; and every illustration is present, as are the black-coated end papers at both front and back and even the tissue protector over the frontispiece. Too, the fascinating stories contained in the book are fully readable, with the one exception noted below.
Now for what’s wrong. Besides the minor foxing and general wear you’d expect on any book this old, there are touches of child-artistry on three of the lesser b/w images (neatly adding color to costumes); a later owner wrote her name and the year 1935 on the title page; a couple of small holes and a short tear appear in text page margins; the cover has frayed and bumped corners; and the spine shows fraying at top and bottom and separation of fabric at the back. More severe is a crack that shows up internally in two spots: at the front (between end papers and on the title page that follows, which is loose at the base) and between pages 206 and 209 – where, lamentably, page 207/208 was removed. Stitching is visible here, but not broken. The page couldn’t have fallen out, so somebody must have wanted the content for some reason. It wasn’t an illustration, since the index cites none on the page. (That page from the story “Jesper Who Herded the Hares” can be easily replaced by making a copy at the library.)
What a difference a few relatively minor glitches can make to the value of a rare first edition – in this case, more than $2000-worth. Higher prices are being asked online for a few others in only fair condition, with no damage to the colored plates, so ours is an especially good bargain. Even later editions with wear often sell in the hundreds.

This copiously illustrated early Victorian edition appeared only 60 years after James Boswell’s masterpiece of biography was first published in 1791. Titled in full “The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. comprehending an account of his studies and numerous works in chronological order; a series of his epistolary correspondence and conversations,” the set is completed by “Boswell's journal of a tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson” as its fifth volume.
The volumes were issued at intervals during 1851 and 1852 by the Office of the National Illustrated Library, London (part of the Illustrated London News group). Volume I incorporates pages advertising the books that would follow, each to include 50 – 100 engravings and be “beautifully bound”.
The original binding of gray-blue cloth -- embossed with an elaborate rose and thistle motif, heraldic crests and the publisher’s name in swirling banners -- remains on our set (whereas many have been rebound) and all illustrations appear to be present. The spines have gilt decoration and titles and page tops are also gilded. Each book measures about 7 3/4 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches wide. Naturally there are condition issues with books more than 150 years old, but no pages are loose and readability isn’t at all impaired. The only problems inside are foxing in some spots, a prior owner's small bookplate (reading Edward Theobald) and, in Volume III, slight separation at the hinge in a couple of places. Volume III looks like it may have been sat on, creating a crease in the middle of the spine and front board, but it did no significant damage. Other covers show only the wear and discoloration you’d expect after so long – apart from Volume I, which is missing a very small strip of cloth at the top of the spine. Overall condition is surprisingly good. You needn't be afraid of using these books; they'll hold up fine.
While it’s still fairly easy to find the first four volumes of this set (mainly from English booksellers), priced at the equivalent of US $150 or so, I saw online only one other set complete with the fifth volume. At current exchange rates, that runs about US $545 plus international shipping from the UK.
Thus, our set for $100 less represents really good value for you fans of the legendary lexicographer, Dr. Johnson, and Boswell, who raised the bar for every subsequent biographer.

If you have a Retro room, here's a great tabletop accessory. It's the book club edition of March Cost's "The Hour Awaits." I don't know which dust jacket view I like better - the slick high-colored cover featuring an evening-gowned beauty (a princess in peril, no less) or the back with its incredibly Retro portrait of the Scottish actress-turned-author, quite a glam queen in her day. Wear to the jacket and book edges is minimal, considering that this volume is more than 50 years old, printed in the early 1950s by Lippincott. Condition inside is lovely. The book measures 8 1/4" x 5 1/4" and contains 285 pages.

A trendy gift when presented in June of 1895 to E. M. Lymon by H.B., this wonderful antique anthology of Georgian and Victorian verse remains in marvelous condition, its silky fabric covering and elaborate gilding still vivid. Surprisingly, the spine *hasn't* sunned and the pages are only slightly foxed here and there, mostly on edges. Gorgeous engravings (145 of them) accompany many of the poems selected and edited by the Rev. Robert Aris Willmott. Publisher was Frederick Warne & Co. of London and New York. Containing a hefty 560 pages in an easy-to-carry 7 1/2" x 5" format, the volume came from a major London antiques fair. All books should be so well-made!

Almost 85 years ago, a young Englishman - likely a poet, himself - presented "An Anthology of Modern Verse" as a parting gift. He wrote "Remembrance: I shall remember thee with tears." Acquired at a London book fair, the volume is beautifully made, its covering fabric still richly colored and gilded in the early Art Deco manner. Its 240 pages are high in fiber content and softly deckle-edged. Spine has sunned and pages somewhat darkened, but overall condition strikes me as quite good, relative to age. The volume includes fascinating poetry by greats, as well as many writers now consigned to time, rather than timelessness. Measuring a hand-pleasing 1/2" x 7", this charming book was printed by Methuen & Co. and is antique by US standards (75 years), merely vintage by the European 100-year rule.
