"Impressionists Side by Side: Their Friendships, Rivalries and Artistic Exchanges"

This splendid coffee table book produced in Italy for Knopf presents gorgeous Impressionist pictures, along with details of the artists' relationships and photographs from their private albums. It's a fascinating way to approach the subject, since their lives were so intertwined.

Art history prof Barbara Erlich White is the author of this 292-page hardback volume, which cost $65 at publication. Weighing in at more than four pounds, it measures 12 x 10.2 x 1 inches. Our copy from a New Mexico estate is in marvelous condition, like new inside and showing only slight wear to the dust jacket.

"The Impressionists: The great works and the world that inspired them" by Robert Katz and Celestine Dars.

More than 350 color plates feature in this gorgeous 288-page hardcover volume by two European experts in Impressionist art. Published by Barnes & Noble Books in 1997, it was elegantly printed in Spain.

As a particularly nice touch, the cover is a laminated pictorial matching the dustjacket. Both are in nice condition, having suffered only a few bumps. The interior is unmarked and bright, enhanced by vivid cobalt blue endpapers. I thought at first there was a little sunning of page edges, but this is too consistent and precise, so it must be shading integral to the printing process. Size is 10.5 by 11.25 inches and provenance is a New Mexico estate.

Both earlier and later printings of this book exist, issued by various publishers between 1991 and 2002. No wonder it's been in such demand; this is quite an authoritative presentation of the work of Monet, Manet, Pissarro, Degas, Renoir, Sisley, Bazille, Morisot and Cassatt.

nother great vintage art book from the estate of a New Mexico collector, this Durer volume was printed in Italy, so its plates are superb. More than half the book consists of full-color prints on heavy stock -- well worthy of framing, if you're willing to take it apart.

Accompanying the images is excellent informative text edited by Stefano Roffo. Size is about 8 by 11 inches (200 by 278 mm). Its dust jacket shows minor wear (most on reverse), but the interior is absolutely pristine. The cover, BTW, is printed identically to the dust jacket, not plain. The Gramercy Great Masters books were a very pretty series, published and distributed by Random House companies.

The Lure of Italy: American Artists and the Italian Experience 1760-1914. 1992. First Edition. Like New.

If you love Italy and/or 19th century American art, prepare to be enthralled by this brilliant and much-coveted work.

Both a scholarly text and an exhibition catalog, it was compiled by the show's curator: distinguished art historian Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr. Its 470 pages include substantive essays by Stebbins and other experts; 319 illustrations (113 of which are color plates); and a full catalog of the exhibit, which opened in Boston on Sept. 16, 1992 and was seen in 1993 in Cleveland and Houston.

This was the first and remains the definitive study of the fascination Italy held for American artists from the time of neo-classicist Benjamin West to the eve of World War I, encompassing Roman, Florentine and Venetian phases.

From a New Mexico estate, our hardback First Edition is in superlative shape, complete with dust jacket. You could easily mistake it for new. Measuring about 10 by 11.25 inches and more than an inch thick, this hard-to-find volume is offered elsewhere online for $80 - $85 (plus shipping, a considerable cost for a book of such weight). Our price is thus a very good value, with U.S. shipping included -- or an equivalent discount on international delivery. We'll gift-wrap free, too, if desired.

"Edward Hopper 1882 - 1967: Transformation of the Real" was issued in 1993 by the outstanding German publishing firm, Benedikt Taschen. Printed in Cologne, it features an enormous number of color plates fine enough to frame, a few black and white illustrations and an intelligent, comprehensive overview of the artist's work by Rolf Gunter Renner (translated by Michael Hulse). This appears to be the first English edition and was acquired in the U.K. The book is part of Taschen's Basic Art Series, published in large softcover format. Length is 96 pages, including a chronology, and size is about 9 by 11.75 inches (230 by 188 mm). Corners show very slight shelf wear and there's a bit of sunning at the top of the back cover, but overall condition is fantastically good. It seems to have barely been opened!

We'll cover insured shipping anywhere in the U.S. (or provide an equivalent discount on international delivery). Please e-mail erinharris@comcast.net to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!

If you love the sophisticated art of Henri de la Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), this delightful vintage book belongs in your library. It's an oversized hardback, beautifully designed and sumptuously illustrated with 28 fine color plates, decorated endpapers and other illustrations in both b/w and color. Some are actual photographs of people he painted.

The quality of printing couldn't be finer; it was done by the legendary Phaidon Press in London, the world's leading producer of art books. Author of the informative and entertaining text is Patrick O'Connor, a specialist in music hall topics known also for his biography of Josephine Baker.

The book contains 80 pages, all clean and tight, within a black cloth binding measuring 10 by 12.8 inches. Corners are firm. Wear to the colorful dust jacket is very slight.

This treasure was published at $25.95 and we've priced it lower than the 16-year-old price. We'll cover shipping anywhere in the United States, too (or provide an equivalent discount on international delivery).

Any fan of R. B. Kitaj (1932 - present) will be thrilled to have this rare art volume. It's the first edition that accompanied his landmark exhibition when it opened at the Tate in London on June 16, 1994. Of truly impressive size and quality, this is the catalog printed by Tate Gallery Publications. (A later version by Rizzoli was distributed to the two American museums hosting the show in 1995.)

More than 200 pages in length, this is a big, hefty, colorful "coffee table" book that's richly illustrated and packed with enlightening text on the artist's career -- including a fascinating interview with Kitaj, his "prefaces" to the featured works (many of which were displayed alongside them) and an essay by his philosopher friend, Richards Wollheim. The book was edited by Richard Morphet, Keeper of the Modern Collection at the Tate from 1986 to 1998, who worked with Kitaj on the selection process and wrote the introduction.

In wonderful condition, showing just a little wear to the back cover, it still has its Tate Gallery price tag (19 pounds and 95 pence, about $40 by today's reckoning).

These don't come onto the market often. The only other softcover copy I found online is priced at the English equivalent of $50, plus overseas shipping, so this is very good value. We'll cover US shipping, too -- or provide an equivalent discount for international delivery.

Great coffee table book for the art lover or gourmet!

Subtitled "A Cookbook by Master Chefs Inspired by Paintings in the National Gallery of Art," this is the 1995 first edition: a 144-page hardback featuring 65 gorgeous artworks and the recipes they led top chefs to create.

Imagine yourself having lunch in Bonnard's or Pissarro's garden -- on a picnic with Toulouse-Lautrec -- at a tea party with Mary Cassatt -- or dining in Tangier with Matisse. The menus and recipes are by such culinary notables as Julia Child, Alice Waters and Rick Bayless. There's even a Renaissance feast by Lorenza de'Medici, designed to honor her oft-painted forebears.

Condition of this remarkable book is very good, showing only minor wear to the dust cover. The original $28 price tag appears on the back. Contents are clean and tight, with no inscriptions. It was published by Collins in San Francisco and has long been out of print.

This extravagantly illustrated hardcover volume discusses the return of ornamentation to modern design -- which continued with a bang, eventually making Post-Modernism a household word.

Authors Robert Jensen & Patricia Conway could certainly spot an emerging trend. No wonder their book (subitled "The New Decorativeness In Architecture & Design") has become a classic, used for teaching and cited in connection with art exhibitions. It includes 485 photographs, 309 in full color, plus 35 architectural drawings, and runs to 297 pages. There are sections on Architecture & Ineriors; The Decorative Crafats; Furnishings & Lighting; and Patterning, Decoration & Usable Art.

Condition of this book is very good. Its contents are clear and tight, with no inscriptions or other marks. (Since it's often used as a text, markings are sadly common on lower-priced copies.)The dust jacket does show wear and a short rip on the back. Underneath, there's slight discoloration along the blue binding's outer edges.

Published at $40 by Clarkson N. Potter, Inc., ORNAMENTALISM has long been out of print. Measuring 10 x 10 inches, it's very heavy for its size.

Whether you want to enhance your own drawing and painting skills or simply learn more about the techniques artists use, these books will do it for you. Lavishly illustrated with attractive and instructive images, they're comprehensive resources worthy to be called encyclopediae.

Included are Jeremy Galton's "The Encyclopedia of Oil Painting Techniques" (192 pages), Hazel Harrison's "The Encyclopedia of Watercolour Techniquees" (192 pages) and Ian Simpson's "The Encyclopedia of Drawing Techniques" (208 pages). All the authors are artists and art educators working in the United Kingdom, where the series originated.

Each hard-bound volume measures about 9.25 inches square and was published in London at 16.95 pounds sterling -- equivalent to about US $32 or $96 for all three. Although they date from 1992, their condition is fantastic. There's no more than the light shelf wear you'd expect to expect to see on dust covers in a bookshop, so these would make splendid gifts if you can part with them -- and a wonderful value at less than $20 each.
