What a romantic gift this antique enameled brass compact would be for your favorite lady! Love is written all over it - literally - in loads of languages. "Ich liebe dich" and "Te Vous Aime" are just the beginning; there are even Oriental characters, as well as the English words, "I love you."
The patent number 1439749 allows us to date this beauty precisely to the very dawn of the Art Deco era. It also bears a maker stamp - SCHILDKRAUT PROD CORP DISTRIBUTOR NEW YORK - and a label "L" on the lipstick. In good condition for a functional item of this age, it comes from -- bet you guessed it -- an estate in Florida, the ultimate Art Deco mecca, Florida.

Worthy of starring in any compact collection, this treasure features a highly detailed and dimensional portrait of a gorgeous lady looking in a hand mirror and holding a powder puff. Rather than upraised in repousse, she appears against a lower background cut out of the metal - a rather amazing feat. She's definitely integral to the piece, not applied to its surface. Engraved beneath the image are the words "Muguet de Mai" - meaning Lily of May (aka lily-of-the-valley). The reverse is patterned with an elaborately machine-turned motif.
Based on the fascinating confluence of both Art Nouveau and Art Deco elements (Greek-style flowing drapery along with bobbed hair and a geometric case shape), I date this definitively to the 1920s. Although we acquired it from an English dealer, the engraving makes it obviously French.
I'm not sure about the metal. It's something quite sturdy that looks pale gold in the two small areas where the silver finish has worn away. Other apparent losses are dark spots that can perhaps be polished off. These little flaws suggest the surface is more likely chromium than rhodium (the latter being tougher); both are, as you know, from the hard-wearing metal family that includes platinum.
A bit of ivory powder remains inside - where, unfortunately, the original mirror doesn't. To judge from the marks left by glue, it was a small round one and thus would be easy to replace, if you actually want to use this, rather than simply display it. The clasp works and the little dimple beside the powder tray is probably original (the spot where you place your finger when removing a depleted tray in order to install a replacement).
Although I could find no other examples of this compact online, I ran across a much coarser version of the same lady's portrait applied to a far later compact, rather badly enameled. The original presumably inspired imitation - and it's easy to see why. This is truly a beauty!

If you're planning a Victorian or Edwardian wedding, here's something you might not know you need! Tussy-mussies served to carry ladies' bouquets - particularly bridal flowers - in the 19th and very early 20th centuries.
Our highly ornamented antique from a Deep South estate is of brass, worked in a beautiful repousse floral pattern on the front and both sides. There are small triangular cutouts positioned for inserting flowers in a graceful shape and a tall rope-twisted handle. In lovely condition, it measures 8 1/2" from handle top to pointy base. It would be an exquisite wedding accessory for a bride or her flower girl - and also charming as a vase, if suspended from an ornamental wall hook. It was recently polished before reaching us; we certainly wouldn't have removed the patina.

The British registry number 27633 on their bases dates these vases to 1896 - no surprise, given their ornate Late Victorian style and shape. Cast of a silver material, probably pot metal, they still have gilt-finished bases, but the gilding inside has largely worn away. Measuring about 5 1/2" tall and 3 1/4" at their widest, these would be a charming pair of vases for a vanity - and also are a lovely height for the dining table, allowing people to see one another over the flowers.
