This delightful antique embroidery shows a lady and a gentleman in 19th century garb, enjoying a stroll beside graceful garden gates.
Although the subject is Victorian, the colors are pure Deco: sophisticated red and black on a ground of pearly beige. Measuring about 6 x 6 inches, the picture is in superb condition, attached by original tape that looks like marbled paper to its glass, mat, backing board and felt. There's no hanging hardware, so it's been displayed in the past on an easel stand or propped on a shelf.
This is one of three marvelous Art Deco embroideries we found in England, the others being of a then-modern subject (the soda fountain). All came from the same estate, so most likely the same hand. If you're interested in all three, we can work out special pricing. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!

This pretty hanky bag feels as luscious as it looks, because there's padding between the soft layers of champagne colored fabric. So much special workmanship is evident here that I expect it was made as a gift -- perhaps featuring the recipient's favorite coral pink flowers on the beautifully painted flap.
The case has been tenderly cared for, too. Its interior is perfectly clean and, on close inspection, I can find only a few tiny spots on the back (that will probably rinse away). Most likely dating would be the 1930s, based on the Late Deco look of the bouquet. Provenance is a California estate.
Measuring about 8 inches square when closed, this will be a very spacious cache for your favorite vintage handkerchiefs -- and it's even nice enough to double as an evening bag, if you add a snap or hook for security.

Here's a glamorous masquerade mask from the days long before you could simply grab a costume at Party City. Certainly one of a kind, most likely made by a lady for her own use, it's gracefully shaped with exotic cat's eye openings and sunray forms above. The front is encrusted with shimmering black sequins, all intact, and the reverse is covered with a soft mesh fabric for comfort.
Quite large, the mask measures about 9 inches wide and almost 8 inches tall (extending from the bridge of the nose to well above the forehead). When you aren't wearing it, this would be a splendid wall decoration, framed or not. For tying on or hanging up, there's a fine double cord that feels like silk embroidery thread, but you might want to replace that with lengths of black ribbon or lace.
This would be gorgeous with a black-sequinned Art Deco flapper dress, but may be as early as Edwardian or Victorian and would be beautiful with clothing from those eras, too. Certainly it's very old, not at all like modern rigid masks. Condition is lovely; the only flaws are on the back and they're minor. Provenance is a New Mexico estate.

Here's a wonderful Retro find from the 1940s: FIVE whisper-soft dresses of fine white cotton lawn with pintucking, embroidery and scalloped hems. Each has a different design and the tags tell us they were hand-made in the Philippines. Condition is lovely, despite their being about 60 years old -- nearly antique, by American 75-year standards. Some could use a few stitches along seam lines, but there are no major problems. They could be brightened with bleach and/or bluing, if you like. Provenance is a Dallas estate and they're a steal at just $18 each, with shipping included.

Luscious color makes this one of the prettiest antique evening purses we've ever seen. Of peach silk, painstakingly hand-beaded with white and peachy-pink pearls, it measures about 7 inches by 4 1/2 inches. Probable dating would be early 1920s, since the bag's refined delicacy shows Edwardian influence, along with a hint of Art Deco. It's in superb condition, with no flaws except a few faint stains on the moire interior, hard to notice. There's a "Hand Made in Belgium" label inside.

Perfect for gals who find most evening bags too small to be useful, this stunning beaded purse is a particularly large one. It measures 10" high x 7-1/2" wide, so is plenty big enough to hold your wallet, cell phone, makeup, keys, hair brush and such. There's a convenient pocket inside to keep small items items handy.
Another thing I love about this bag is its clever bead pattern - mimicking the shape of a bow-tied Victorian reticule. And the color scheme is *very* Art Deco: sophisticated and unexpected! The silver gray background and accents of red, yellow, lilac and white give it a 1920s look. However, I doubt it has much age. It certainly hasn't seen much use; the condition is like new. Whatever its dating (and I'm guessing 1980s), it's total gorgeousness. Label within inner pocket reads: Jerome's Made in Hong Kong. Beading is exquisite, the snap closure is high quality and the extra-long silken cord provides over-the-shoulder comfort and convenience.

This highly ornamental early plastic fan features lacy openwork and glitz in sophisticated black and white. Each edge, one black and one white, has molded ornamentation as well as rhinestones in gold-tone settings. The black edge is missing one gold flower, which is very hard to notice - as is the little bit of glue staining around a few rhinestones on the white side. I see no other flaws. This fan is really in great shape with original ribbons and little evidence of use. It measures about 12" wide when open and its length is 7", not counting the nicely incised silver-tone handle. For dating, I think 1940s (the last pre-air conditioning decade). Provenance is a Dallas area estate.

These two embroidered pictures from England *scream* Art Deco with their soda fountain theme, stylized forms and sophisticated, vibrant colors. Each is tape-mounted beneath glass to its mat, backing board and felt
The one measuring about 6" x 6" still has its original tape that looks like marbled paper, but the larger 8" x 6" picture has modern black tape, so you'll probably want to retape both with a matching color. There's no hanging hardware now, BTW, so they were shown in the past on easel stands or propped on a shelf.
Almost surely embroidered by the same person - since it was acquired with these and framed identically - we also have a charming Victorian Revival scene. Run a search here for "Victorian couple," if you'd like to see it and we can work out special pricing, if you want all three.

Our second string bag from the Roaring 20s - worked in a more subtle color scheme of soft purple, fern green and black on taupe - has a pouch big enough to hold a lot. It measures 9" x 6 1/2", and the strap is about 39" long. On close inspection, the strap could use a few stitches for reinforcement; there's one frayed spot at the top, easily repaired. The purse has no further problems I notice and, like our other string bag from the same Dallas area estate, shows its original colors because of being carefully stored away for decades. These two bags are truly exceptional finds - superstars of a type that's rare to begin with.
