Here's something that doesn't come along very often: an absolutely stunning set of vintage towel holders. Much nicer than anything we can find in the shops now, these feature heavyweight brass brackets in the romantic form of giardinetti -- meaning "little gardens" in Italy, where the design was introduced into 18th century Rococo jewelry. A giardinetto (the singular) is any ornamental bouquet in a basket, urn or other container.

Another delightful thing about these is that they install with no visible hardware, because the brackets slide over plain metal strips screwed separately to the wall and then secure in front with decorative brass caps. Adhesive isn't needed, although vestiges of a wall on which glue was placed remain on the back of the metal strips never seen in use. Condition in front, where it counts, is lovely -- showing only minor surface wear to the ring and rods. Thankfully, all requisite hardware is still present.

Probable dating of these ultra-feminine bath accessories from a Dallas area estate is circa 1950. The rod is 18.5 inches long, the ring is 5.75 inches round and each floral bracket is about 4.25 inches tall and 3 inches wide.

Showcase your favorite collectibles on these glorious vintage giltwood shelves and you'll thrill to their decorative impact. And how about displaying your loveliest angels on them at Christmastime?

Carved in Italy no later than the mid-20th century (possibly earlier), the shelves are highly detailed and gilded by the time-honored technique that calls for an undercoat of rich red. Each is one of a kind, being hand-crafted. This is typical Florentine work and prices in lire are pencilled on the backs of two. Sizes (approximate) are 6 x 6.5 x 3.5; 5.75 x 6.5 x 3.5; and 5.25 x 4.75 x 2.5. Condition is superb, with only minor losses of gilding and no evidence of any repairs.

These treasures come from a Texas estate and were no doubt souvenirs of a holiday in Florence. Their asymmetrical plumed forms are pure Rococo, but ready to add sparkle and dimension to virtually any decor. I've seen such shelves used to great effect not only with antiques but even in contemporary rooms.

As always, there's no charge for insured U.S. shipping and gift-wrap is free if desired. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!

If you're collecting these wonderful cut paper pictures from the 1920s, as lots of people are today, here's a rare opportunity to add *two* more great Bobellas at once! We found both in East Anglia, but from different sources. Each bears the label, "This is a Genuine Bobella (reg'd) Silhouette Made in England."

The subject is charming in each of these: a romantic dancing couple and a pensive literary lady at her desk (or perhaps she's in heavy contemplation of a guest list). It's amazing how much personality can be injected into this art form, and look at the details of the furnishings! The literary one measures 8 5/8" x 7 1/8" and is tape-mounted beneath glass to backing board. The tape, after 70 years or so, has quite a few losses. You'll probably want to replace that and frame the other picture similarly with tape, since that was the original look. Current framed size of the dancers is about 6 3/4" x 8 1/4", so that picture has probably been cut down a little.
