Need an exceptional gift for your Knight in Shining Armor? Here's something very special, sure to delight any man (or woman) with a sense of history. Just think of the stories this sword chape could tell! Made in England soon after the Norman Conquest, the chape dates from the 12th or 13th century (between 1100 and 1299), so it might even have gone on a Crusade or two. It reached us via a leading antiquities dealer in Cambridgeshire.

Measuring 2 1/4" by 1 1/8", it's of particularly elegant form and the bronze has a lovely dark green patination all over. With the addition of a leather thong and interesting hand-made beads from historic Bury St. Edmunds, it's become a real swashbuckler of a pendant - ready to wear (or display on the wall, if your guy isn't the jewelry type).

Here's a perfect accent for any Victorian room - a set of fashion plates that beautifully illustrate the styles worn when Queen Victoria was a new bride in her early twenties. They were published in one of the monthly magazines eagerly awaited by chic women all over the world. We acquired the pair, tagged circa 1842, at a Suffolk auction room.

The left-facing model wears a demure evening gown that makes a feature of her shoulders with a dramatic large collar. Its bodice is long and pointed bodice, miles of ruffled trim adorn the bell-shaped skirt and fabric roses appear on the bosom and peek from the depths of the split puffed sleeves. The right-facing model in the illustration titled "Walking Dress" wears a frock decorated with braid and buttoned sleeves, which is covered by a stunning cape made of panels laced together with heavy tasseled cords.

These images are so well detailed we can even study the accessories. Twin bracelets appear by evening and so-called "engageantes" by day. The latter were detachable lacy collars and false undersleeves that were kept freshly laundered and intended to convey refinement. The daytime look also includes a delicate whitework handkerchief and a whimsical bonnet with ribbons, ruffles and roses. In good condition for their age, these prints are highly collectible. We treated them to new ornate giltwood frames around wide suede-like mats. Framed size is an impressive 16" by 13" and the visible image area is about 6 1/4" by 3 3/4". Glazing is standard, since we feel non-glare glass kills colors.

Our price for the pair represents exceptional value. You'd have to pay about as much as this (or more) just for the high-quality mats and frames. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!

Set with marquis, round and square-cut rhinestones, these dazzling vintage earscrews are made of an extremely bright silver metal, probably rhodium. Gold foil backs the larger stones that form the flower petals, giving them a pretty warm tone. Accenting the floral forms are feathery bursts of "fireworks" - a motif very popular during World War II. Each earring measures about 1" wide x 1 1/4" tall and backs are screw-type, as is right for the period. Amid the great variety of shapes and exceptional overall dazzle, it's hard to notice, but one stone appears to be a replacement and our price reflects that. These would cost a great deal more, if perfect.

These marvelous antique jewels are from very early in the Art Deco period, because strong Edwardian influence is evident in the fine filigree drops and dainty chain, as well as the choker length of the necklace. Likely dating would be 1922, immediately following news of the Tut's Tomb discovery, and probable origin is Czech (based on the high-quality glass and metalwork).

The six pendant drops, four for the necklace and two for the earrings, are beautifully fashioned in the form of cylinder seals found in ancient burials and each holds two vivid green crystal beads. The necklace measures 14 1/2 inches long, plus its hook and the drop at the back of the chain. Earrings will fall about 1 1/4 inches below the ear.

Provenance is a Midwestern estate and condition, as you see, is absolutely lovely. The gilt brass shows time's rich patina, which we left in place, but of it course can be polished more brightly if you prefer. Later earring posts had been added, so we replaced those with antique earwires that are right for the period (from old store stock, never worn).

Could the era that gave us Puck - not to mention Henry VIII, history's most self-indulgent monarch since Nero - be less than playful? Not likely! Little Liz, herself, might have practiced up to fund colonies and armadas with a toy purse on a frame like this one. Beautifully detailed on both sides and measuring about 2" wide by 5/8" high, this was the perfect accessory for a Tudor tot learning to say *MINE* along with *GO TO THE TOWER* - and it's perfect now as a whimsical pendant for an adult or child. Just add a silk cord or velvet ribbon and tie it on as a choker, since they're so trendy this season.

Acquired from a leading English antiquities dealer, this piece is exceedingly rare. Chances are, you'll never see another like it; we haven't.

If you walk on the Wild Side, you'll be crazy about this huge 5 1/4-inch vintage brooch and the matching earrings. Created by a New Mexico craftswoman around 1980, this set has been in my personal collection since then. I've decided to sell it on, since I have another brooch that's similar (even bigger). Mine will be worn a *lot* this season, now that feathers are all over top designers' runway shows.

The central portion of the brooch and the earring tops are made of some sort of glitz-imbued plastic that's black with shiny gold flecks. Feathers and beads hang from the earrings - and the feather-crowned brooch, in which quite a few stunning beads are embedded, has others rising on wires at adjustable angles. All the jewels finish with dramatic saber-toothed dangles of dyed bone and are in original condition. (There's a teensy chip at the top back of one dangle that's been there all along and doesn't show when worn.) Steel earring posts and a brooch clasp mechanism are embedded in the backs.

You'll get loads of attention whenever you wear this spectacular set, and the mix of colors makes it go with practically everything: black, brown, tan, dark blue, blue-green and any shade of coral or rusty red.

This delightful wrap bracelet from the 1930s is antique or almost, by American 75-year standards, rather than merely vintage. Art Deco influence is clearly evident in the geometric pattern of the snake's "scales" - which are incised circles that match his little round eyes. His head, formed separately, shows quite a lot of detail (even on the sides) and is stamped on its reverse HECHO EN MEXICO.

Although the bracelet shows little wear on the front, the stamp inside is indisdinct after decades of use and another mark that appears behind the head is worn past my ability to interpret it - except to rule out the eagle assay hallmark introduced in the 1940s. It looks more like a stylized left-facing parrot with its beak open wide than anything else. The initials M and W seem to appear faintly within it. Perhaps this will mean something to you, but Mexican silver isn't one of my specialties. The metal doesn't tarnish aggressively, so I'm puzzled by that, too. There are no surface losses to indicate plating, so I have to conclude it's either 1) sterling treated to prevent oxidation; 2) a less pure silver or 3)possibly alpaca, chromium or rhodium. Whatever it's made of, this wonderful jewel shines like the dickens and is flexible enough to fit any size wrist or forearm. Its provenance is a New Mexico estate.

Turquoise is the "it" color now, both for fashions and jewelry, so there couldn't be a better time to own these graceful hand-wrought earrings. Their sophisticated Modernist design features elongated ovals of silver bevel-set with well-matched cabochons of good quality natural turquoise about 3/4" long by 1/2" wide. Overall size is about 1 1/4" x 3/4". There's a bit more of the desirable dark matrix in the stones than the photo could capture, due to glare, and their rich blue color has greened somewhat with age, as turquoise does. (I particularly prize the greener pieces in my own collection, because they're the good old ones.)

From a New Mexico estate, these jewels are almost certainly Native American-made - but old enough to precede the stamp that now guarantees Native American craftsmanship (which I believe was introduced early in the 1970s). The only mark present is FA 925. FA presumably refers to the artist, whose initials I don't recognize. The earrings are in beautifully wearable condition, showing only age-appropriate surface wear and a little waviness along the edge that you have to hunt for. This is inevitable, given the delicacy of sterling silver, and doesn't detract. Some patina is present, especially on reverse, but that will easily polish off if you prefer a brighter look. Based on style, I'd date them to the 1950s, but the post fittings argue for a 1960s dating.

Of black Bakelite or some other early plastic, this antique Art Deco brooch is sleek and sophisticated. Accentuating its streamlined form are radiant geometric overlays of finely detailed silver metal (likely chromium or rhodium) at each end. Of impressive size, this dazzler measures about 2 1/2 x 1 1/4 inches. Probable dating is late 1920s and, although it was acquired in England, it looks French to me.

On close inspection, you can see that the pin was assembled in three parts (center plus two triangular tips recessed to receive the silvery ornaments). The black areas within the overlays seem to be enameled, but could be insets of a shinier plastic.

The romance of Art Nouveau design is perfectly captured by his exquisite antique silver bowl with ruffled edges upon which finely detailed butterflies perch gracefully as handles. It's a wonderfully versatile piece you can use to hold favorite jewels on your vanity or in any room for flowers or potpourri. You could serve sweets and nuts in it, too, or cache small items on your desktop.

Dating from the Late Victorian era, circa 1900, it's about 5 3/4" wide at the handles and 2 1/2" tall with a bowl 4" in diameter. It looks very French, but, on the base (which feels like it's weighted) the signature DERBY appears with the numeral 2 and a logo that looks like feathered wings extending in both directions. This presumably refers to a metalsmith of Derby town in England, because the marks are entirely different from those used by Derby Silver Co. in Connecticut and by Crown Derby (famed for its china).

The bowl polishes like sterling but, in the absence of sterling hallmarks, must be a lesser grade of silver or very heavy plating. We've cleaned it considerably, leaving the dark patina only in crevices. Condition is excellent; there's no damage, only age-appropriate surface wear. Provenance is an English estate, via a specialist Art Nouveau dealer in East Anglia.
