Need a gift to delight an Estee Lauder collector (or would that be you)? Here's a spectacular little compact by the legendary Estee. It has a domed shape accented by a vivid faux turquoise cabochon and a gilded surface that's granulated all over! The piece measures 1 1/2" in diameter, plus its pretty patterned clasp. Some solid perfume remains inside, where you can read the maker's logo in the lid.
This beauty shows a little age-appropriate surface wear to the metal, nothing major, and dates from either 1968 or 1973. (It was first made in the former year and reissued in the latter, according to Roselyn Gerson's book on Lauder perfume compacts.) Provenance is a Dallas area estate.
The other compacts of this type that I've seen online are priced at $40 or more (plus shipping), so ours is a super deal. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!

This spectacular Deco brooch is a whopper, 2 1/4 inches round, set with sparkling diamond rhinestones of three different types. The baguettes form a pinwheel pattern among round stones in two sizes (big and bigger). All are prong-set and tight. A few are somewhat darkened with age, but this doesn't detract; actually the subtle color variety adds to the dimensionality of the dome shape. For its size, it's nicely lightweight, so you won't have to worry about damage to fabrics, and the safety clasp is in fine working order. BTW, I saw online a new brooch practically identical to this, priced at $175. Isn't it nice that the real thing can actually cost less than a knockoff?

I recently saw online a brand-new rhinestone brooch almost identical to this, but priced at $185! Why not pay $100 LESS for a genuine piece of the past that's sure to keep gaining value?
There's a sweet delicacy about this brooch that makes me think it dates no later than circa 1930. The airy openwork pattern shows Edwardian influence and the stones have a warm quality that suggests old paste rather than rhinestones. It's of medium size, measuring 1 1/4" round, featuring smaller stones set like spokes and an outer wheel around the central crystal. All of these are bright and seem tight in their bezel settings. The safety-clasp is also in great shape.

This enchanting antique brooch of silver pot metal sparkles all over with diamond pastes (so much more brilliant than rhinestones) and its oval shape frames a central bow, upraised from the outer mounting. The dimensionality of its layered construction gives the brooch a lot of presence.
The dazzling "all white" look and cutouts anticipate Edwardian style, toward which Victorian was evolving in the 1890s, when I believe this was made. Amazingly, it's in completely original condition. Even the elongated pinstem indicative of great age remains present. As you know, pinstems have been shorter for more than 100 years and older ones are usually found snipped for greater comfort. While you *will* need to be careful where you place it, this is quite a valuable and collectible piece. Size is about 1 3/4 inches long by one inch wide.

This vintage pin is a real dazzler, paved with beautifully cut crystals of excellent quality and substantial size - almost 2" x 1 1/4" (5 cm x 3 cm). Although acquired from the estate of a very elderly Englishwoman, this jewel looks French to me. The mix of geometric forms is extremely sophisticated. Note the oval outline and triangular ends, inset with stones of both rectangular and round shape surrounding that wonderful square-cut central crystal. There's exciting variety and yet stylistically the design holds together with perfect integrity. (In case you didn't notice, I find this jewel particularly yummy.)
Also of special interest is the gold-colored setting of what seems an essentially Deco design. White metals were of course a great deal more commonplace in Deco days, which inspired me to do some research and discover that aurora borealist crystals debuted in 1955. Thus, the jewel dates from the 1950s, rather than the 1930s, but who cares?
Condition is so immaculate that you'd actually think it's new, if you didn't know its provenance. Except on the pinstem assembly, under very high magnification, I can't find even slight signs of wear. And the yellow gold surface is not only unworn but extra-bright in hue, suggesting very high-carat plating. The reverse is interestingly pebbled.

Subtlety and Art Nouveau don't ordinarily go together, but here's a splendid exception. This restrained and yet characteristically Nouveau jewel is lavished with floral repousse work, but holds excesses within the bounds of a bar pin, slender and 2 inches long. Notice the finely wrought clasp is engraved to match the front -- a particularly elegant touch.
This beauty is hallmarked for sterling and retains quite a bit of age patina, which can easily be polished off if you prefer a high shine. Dating would be no later than the 1890s, based on the type of fastener; origin is most likely American; and condition, as you see, is superb. Obviously the brooch is entirely hand-made.
There's no charge for insured U.S. shipping and gift-wrap is always free when desired. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!

If you have a Retro room, here's a great tabletop accessory. It's the book club edition of March Cost's "The Hour Awaits." I don't know which dust jacket view I like better - the slick high-colored cover featuring an evening-gowned beauty (a princess in peril, no less) or the back with its incredibly Retro portrait of the Scottish actress-turned-author, quite a glam queen in her day. Wear to the jacket and book edges is minimal, considering that this volume is more than 50 years old, printed in the early 1950s by Lippincott. Condition inside is lovely. The book measures 8 1/4" x 5 1/4" and contains 285 pages.

A trendy gift when presented in June of 1895 to E. M. Lymon by H.B., this wonderful antique anthology of Georgian and Victorian verse remains in marvelous condition, its silky fabric covering and elaborate gilding still vivid. Surprisingly, the spine *hasn't* sunned and the pages are only slightly foxed here and there, mostly on edges. Gorgeous engravings (145 of them) accompany many of the poems selected and edited by the Rev. Robert Aris Willmott. Publisher was Frederick Warne & Co. of London and New York. Containing a hefty 560 pages in an easy-to-carry 7 1/2" x 5" format, the volume came from a major London antiques fair. All books should be so well-made!

Almost 85 years ago, a young Englishman - likely a poet, himself - presented "An Anthology of Modern Verse" as a parting gift. He wrote "Remembrance: I shall remember thee with tears." Acquired at a London book fair, the volume is beautifully made, its covering fabric still richly colored and gilded in the early Art Deco manner. Its 240 pages are high in fiber content and softly deckle-edged. Spine has sunned and pages somewhat darkened, but overall condition strikes me as quite good, relative to age. The volume includes fascinating poetry by greats, as well as many writers now consigned to time, rather than timelessness. Measuring a hand-pleasing 1/2" x 7", this charming book was printed by Methuen & Co. and is antique by US standards (75 years), merely vintage by the European 100-year rule.

With gorgeous scrolled etching on each side of its round bezel-set citrine stone, this elegant antique jewel is marked 10k on its pinstem and also signed "C" within a diamond-shaped mark on its catch. An excellent early safety clasp is present and appears original, which dates the jewel toward the end of the bar brooch era - Late Victorian or Edwardian (circa 1895-1910). Pictures really don't do justice to this treasure, which is in superb condition and measures 2 ¼" X ¼". Its price represents an extraordinary value. Elsewhere online, a seller is asking more than $150 for a 10k pin of the same size, set with only a rhinestone.
What an impressive gift this would be for someone you treasure, and we'll gladly gift wrap and ship free to any U.S. address. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. Thanks for looking!
