Researching this remarkable jewel led me to the fascinating discovery that there were "Female Centaur Clubs" in late 18th and early 19th century England. Both Mary Astell, the first British feminist, and Mary Wollstonecraft (later Gothic author Mary Shelley) were active in them. On one level, they were the feminine equivalent of young men's drinking clubs at Oxford and Cambridge, but these well-educated ladies nipping at the rum punch while reciting praise to female centaurs aimed ...click for details

This extraordinary Bohemian necklace captures all the opulence and imagination of the Belle Epoque in Eastern Europe -- the very end of an era, since Bohemia would emerge from World War I as Czechoslovakia, no longer part of a vanished Austro-Hungarian Empire. Although unsigned, it simply can't be other than Eastern European. Bohemia was well-known for the best and most inventive art glass, besides which the area has always awash with amber and the two oval cabochons here are the real thing ...click for details

You need sensational red jewels to complete a special outfit? Here's a breathtaking set with the lavish look of Bohemian garnets in old gold. While the floral forms are Pure Victorian, the spring-ring clasps tell us they're from the 1920s Victorian Revival period - still antique, but about 50 years younger than they look. We have not, BTW, cleaned these exquisite jewels at all - in deference to the purists among us - but, with a touch of TLC and Windex, they could light up a room like a ...click for details

A whopping 5 inches tall, this stunning art Deco vintage pin will never be overlooked when you wear it! Obviously hand-made, it's of hammered copper and brass formed in the torch-like shape of the Egyptian 'lotus' (actually a water lily), which in ancient mythology was regarded as the source of all creation. Probable dating is circa 1927-1929, the time of the first touring exhibitions of King Tut's treasures. Arts and Crafts influence is quite evident, along with Deco. ...click for details

Dating from the Late Victorian era, circa 1900, this exquisite antique lavaliere of gilded brass retains its original chain. Its ornate filigree drop has pretty green enamel accents and is set with a gorgeous art glass cabochon. The stone, probably Bohemian or Peking glass, simulates jade. The 19" chain is comprised of fancy links, all hand-soldered. Total length is 21 1/2".
