Charming 1916 Duotone by T.C. Dugdale, Framed
Thomas Cantrell Dugdale(1880-1952) was a popular English painter and illustrator. This print - titled "East and West" - was created rather early in his career, during the transitional period between Edwardian and Art Deco eras. As you see, it juxtaposes the pert European miss at top left with a languid veiled lady attended by her servant. Interestingly, he was married in the same year as this picture is dated to Amy Browning, a distinguished artist and suffragette, so one expects there's more than a bit of Amy in that lively Western girl with the tall boots and riding crop.

As you know, the Victorians and Edwardians were intrepid travelers who published fascinating accounts of their encounters with exotic places. This is no doubt a plate from one of those valuable, long out-of-print books about North Africa or the Middle East.

The print is really a cutie and in great condition. Its pretty gilt frame doesn't have much age, but the style is right for the period. Framed size is about 11" x 13" and provenance is a Suffolk auction room.
