A charming medievalist image dated to the Edwardian era, this circa 1914 illustration - "Dies Irae" by Maxfield Parrish - was based upon a hymn from the Middle Ages, later featured in Sir Walter Scott's "The Lay of the Last Minstrel." Probably composed by Thomas of Celano, who lived in the 13th century, the hymn referred to the Last Judgment: "Dies irae, dies illa, Solvet saeclum in favilla, Teste David cum Sibylla." Translated, this means: "On that day, that wrathful day, David and the Sibyl say, Heaven and earth shall melt away."
The print comes from a specialist dealer in Lincolnshire and is in great condition. We've framed this one in giltwood to the size of 7 1/4" x 9 1/4". Thanks for looking! |
