Although famous for saying, "We are not amused," Queen Victoria was greatly amused by her children and loved to sketch them. Clearly she had talent as an artist -- and no doubt it helped that she had Lewis Carroll for a drawing master. The larger of these two vintage pictures, measuring about 8 x 10 inches (extended to 12 x 15 by its mat and frame), is inscribed "Pufsy. Before Going to Bed" and has the printed title "The Princess Royal and her nurse, April 1843". We see the little princess both before, during and after her evening bath. The second image, of which about 6.5 x 7.5 inches is revealed, is matted and framed to the size of 10 x 13. The subject is again young "Pufsy" and the printed title is "The Princess Royal, August 1842," although the Queen's inscription indicates one of the images dates from 1843. Here the little princess is shown in five vignettes, at play in four of them and very opulently dressed up in the one at the center. Both prints are identified as etchings by Victoria, issued by the Royal Library, Windsor, in 1979. A visit to the Windsor Castle website showed that prints by Victoria aren't available in their shop now, so this must have been a special limited edition. The frames of antiqued silver and gold color are presumably from 1979 or so. They reached us from a New Mexico estate. Glare from the glazing made details of the drawings extremely difficult to photograph. If you'd like me to try again, please e-mail. They're absolutely delightful and a great bargain at this combined price. Obviously, nothing could be more perfect for a Victorian room than art created by the Queen, herself. Please e-mail to confirm availability, order or request more photos. There's no charge for insured U.S. shipping and gift-wrap is always free when desired. Thanks for looking! |
